3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
33cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours opaque black with a gloss that reminds of purple olives. There is a nice crema head to start, it then reduces and a very thin layer of lace remains. The nose has chocolate, nuts and raisins soaked in alcohol. The taste has more dark chocolate and raisins in alcohol. The palate is medium to full bodied with a big creamy texture and the finish is fairly elegant but the alcohol is a little too obvious. Overall, a good beer but obvious alcohol note is a bit too much.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Bottle shared with the husband.
Very dark brown in color, the head fades away fairly quickly.
Very boozy aroma, milk and dark chocolate, espresso beans.
Taste: Wow. Sweet, sweet sticky malts that manage not to be cloying, tart cherries, and then a surprising punch of hops.

4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bottle. Pours sludge black, with a beige head that leaves except for a ring on the outside. Nose is charcoal, ash, tobacco, cacao, alcohol. The taste was a surprise since the evident high abv in the nose is well hidden here. More ash and charcoal in the taste, with some roasted coffee beans, molasses, and Christmas pudding which lingers with the hops. A nice big mouthfeel.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
33cl bottle (9.2%) pours nice and dark with tan head. The aroma is a little dusty then opens up to molasses, dark roasted coffee, dark roasted malts and then to some slight spicy almost jalapeño like aromatics. The taste is smooth yet a bit prickly too with dark roasted malts, dark roasted coffee, some spicy to slightly pine hops to midway and into the finish. It gets a little chocolate and black licorice like in addition to the other notes as it heads into the after taste.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle purchased at the brewery and consumed at home - Jan ’12 @ 9.8% ABV.
Pours a very dark rich borwn colour with a creamy off white/beige/light brown head.
The head soon reduces to a rim around the glass and a small pond with bubbles floating off centre!
Chocolate dominates the malty aroma of this beer, perhaps a little liquourice and coffee also and a vague wood smell.
Taste is dominated once more by chocolate then roasted malts, slightly burnt sugar, background coffee and caramel. The chocolate is sweet but bitter.
Excellent mouthfeel to this beer, full bodied but silky smooth and caresses the throat leaving it wanting more and more (and more!)
Overall an excellent imperial stout, doesn’t feel like you are drinking one at around the 10% mark at all, they don’t come much better than this!!!
