Pretty much how a stout should be. Creamy with warm roasted malts and fresh hops. Lots of smaller notes in the flavours - coffee, chocolate, vanilla, berries. Not too sweet and very smooth considering its strength.

330ml bottle [this time 9.9% abv]. Darkest brown colour with late awakening, average, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, brown head. Dark malty aroma has a grainy touch, hints of treacle, coffee, a touch of roast. Taste is moderately sweet fruity and dark malty, hints of red and dark berries, blue grapes, plum, dark chocolate, a touch of roast, some treacle, bitter and slightly herbal hoppy overtones, roasty coffee finish. Lasting finish, sticky palate. Very well balanced, complex, but integrated and concentrated. Yeeeeees!

June 2013 - Bottle, 5 months old. Pours medium for style, no head. Aroma has lots of roasted barley, booze, yeast. Mouthfeel is medium, smooth. Taste has barley, some coffee and salt. Alcohol is not really noticeable. Dry spicy finish. Decent enough. (3.8)

Jan 2015 - Bottled May 2012 as ’Imperial Brown Stout 10%’. No mention of 1856 back then. Pours thick black and forms no head at all. Aroma is hazelnut chocolate, coffee, leather, toffee. Body is medium to full, rich, smooth, oily, low carbonation. Taste is smooth semisweet malt, charred wood, soft chocolate, more hazelnut, burnt coffee, medium hoppy bitterness. Really moreish stuff and ultra-drinkable. Excellent. (4.5)

Bottle from BrewDog Camden. Pours heavy brown bordering on black with almost no head, just a light khaki ring around the edge. Nose shows heavy liquorice/aniseed with light espresso and vanilla. Taste is light liquorice, molasses, milk chocolate, bread. Quite a bit of heat on the finish. Thinnish mouth feel. Ok but not great
