We have brewed a beer to commemorate the birth of our son. It is a strong dark beer which hopefully will keep until he is of age to drink it. Brewed in collaboration with Phil Lowry, Simon Siemsgluess and Chrigl Luthy. Bottled.

33cl Bottle, a gift from nate2g, thanks Nate! Black colour, brown head. Aroma of black liquorice, alcohol, roasted malts, sweet chocolate. Flavour is sweet, slightly alcoholic, hard roasted malts, lots of liquorice (drop), firm roast and hop bitterness, bit of vanilla. Fullbodied.

Inky black pour with a small brown head which fades to nothing. Rich aroma of molasses, chocolate, coffee, slight smokiness. Taste is intense and sweet, with more chocolate. Syrupy yet smooth, more subtle smoke. Coffee bitterness and slight booze on the finish, definitely a sipper but not cloying, mostly hides the alcohol. Absolutely awesome.

Bottle that Craig Garvie opened at his house. The nose is nice with malted barley and black strap molasses. The first sip is great. Unbelievable flavor and balance. This is awesome!

Small bottle from Utobeer, Borough Market, London. Tall chocolate colored head. Body is the darkest brown, bordering on black. Dark dried fruits hits the nose at first. Then an alcohol sting, followed by a smell of roasted ashy malts and licorice. Taste is heavily bitter-sweet. Tarry and roasted, with lots of salty liorice. Quite liquor-ish. Also some chocolate, and some mellowing vanilla tones. Medium to full body. Chewy and hot in the mouth. Alcohol burning finish. Rough around the edges, this one. Not my favorite Imp Stout.

Bottled. Very black, small beige head. Aroma of pear and winegum as well as licorice. Dense and sweet with packed full body. Heavy on salmiak, notes of pears and licorice. Heacily salty bitterness.

Bottled (thanks TBone!). Very deep brown, close to black colour, small brown head. Aroma is liquorice, ashes, some roasted, toffee and caramel. Beautiful. Flavour is rather roasted, ashy and some liquorice, alcohol and toffeeish. Also some dark berries and mild wooden notes, Stinging sweetness. Alcohol burnt quite well on the way down the throat.

Bottled 330ml (brewed 290910)
Bottle from the brewery.
Dark opaque brown color, small creamy brown head. Very roasted strong aroma, alochol, licorice, black coffee. Full-bodied. Dry roasted flavor. Very intensive sticky-licorice brew. Long long lingering licorice aftertaste. Nose is great, flavor is a bit too burned and dry. Probably needs more cellaring.

Bottle from Kris Wines - ’small imperial stout - 9%’. Maybe my expectations of this were too high after the sublime export stout 1890 I had last week from Kernel. This pours black, with reddish brown edging, with a thin milk chocolate head which dissipates quickly. Nose is a very deep roasted, almost burnt aroma with deep dark fruits and chocolate. Prune and stewed plum and spiced wine. Taste is really quite bitter though. Almost a burnt bitterness that is too overpowering for me. Fruit comes through later and it’s nice on the finish, but this is too bitter for me. Black expresso coffee and very little chocolate It’s overpowering everything else. Dry on the finish.

Opaque black stout. Good chocolate coloured head. Rich dark malt nose with a promise of dark fruits and warming spirits. Smooth softish palate, semi dry. Rich dark malt and cream. A little dark chocolate and a trace of coffee. Whisper of red fruits underneath. Finishes semi dry with a little licquorish. Quite light for an Impy and hides the 12.5% quite well. Delicious and drinkable.

Bottle@Home. Simply: WOW! What an aroma and flavour. Both with loads of chocolate and vanilla. In the the flavour also soy sauce, salt and orange. Very nicely hopped. Full and sticky.
