Bottle at home 4th April. Aroma is intense pine orange grapefruit and a hint of chocolate orange. Great mouth feel, smooth. Taste is delicious, pine fresh hop, slightly numbing in the mouth. Another very good black IPA from Kernel

Strong rye bread aroma, rather sour. The flavour has the rye playing with the hops in a remarkable way. Pine, euchaluptus.

Color: a black liquid diamond with a big heavy brown head and no carbonization. Smell: malt, roasted and finally hops. Taste : malt, caramel. Aftertaste : hops. Really good beer very interesting and strange!

Bottle at the old brewery, London. Pours dark brown with a frothy, beige foam head. Light roast, subtle coffee and light grapefruit in the nose. Medium sweet flavor with some tangy dark malts, dark and toasty bread, roasted malts, some grapefruit and pineapple. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Faintly roasty finish with light resinous stickiness, mild cocoa, some pine, faint coffee, light dry grass, citrus fruits. Pretty superb. Very dynamic with different aspects coming through as I drink. Apparently this was Nate’s last brew; he left us with a wonderful farewell beer.

Bottle from the old brewery. Very dark brown pretty much black colour. Golden bubbly head, fades quite quickly. Aroma is roasty, bit of coffee, and lots of hoppy citrus fruitiness. Grapefruit sharpness. Taste is initially hoppy bitter, then goes to roasty and chocolatey malt, and finishes a slow fade of coffee and grapefruit bitterness. Very nice and smooth in the mouth. Bit further down more fruit, orange and some tropical hints. Really nice. I must have this again.

Clear dark brown - red beer. Decent pale tan - cream head. Smooth dry palate, semi soft with fine carbonation. A little malt cream to start. Very mildly roasted dark malt with a whisper of coffee. Dry tangy citrus hops - orange and lemon. Pine. Some red berry fruits coming to the fore towards the dry finish. Bitter linger. A whisper of rye spice. Another very complex Black IPA form the Kernel. Great stuff!

2nd April 2012
Rounded off nicely now - lost some of the coffee grit but is nicely piney and pithy!

330ml bottle from the brewery. Very lively out of the bottle; even once half had been poured the remaining beer in the bottle continued to froth towards the top. In the glass it’s a deep & murky looking brown colour with a huge, dense, lasting & lacing light tan head. Heady grapefruit, pine, kiwi & peach to the fore on the nose backed by delicate roasted malt & coffee tones. The malt component is much more prominent on the tongue though never becoming more dominant than the hop element; roasted malt, coffee & chocolate counterbalanced by pine, grapefruit & resinous hops. Medium body, medium carbonation - quite crisp, dry & fresh on the palate - some warmth in the throat & finishing with a lingering hop/malt bittersweetness. Big hops in the Kernel way and decent dark malt interplay. Not a style for everyone but it floats my boat & Kernel have done it very well to my mind on this occasion. 7.1%

Bottle from Beermerchants.com. Pours dark as Coke with an enourmous frothy light tanned head. Aroma is rye, floral and fruity hops, some peppers and equalyptus as well. Taste is intense fresh & crisp hops, high carbonated, medium bodied. Some nice liquorice, sweet malts and mints towards the lingering dry bitter end, do i need to say this is very good?

(Bottle) Pours dark brown to black with a large nougat coloured head. The aroma holds grapefruit and pine up front with undertones of spicy/minty rye, dark bread, soft roast, wet tobacco, toasted cookies, herbs, resinous wood, black currant tea, tart apricots and marmalade candy. Really bright on the nose. The flavor is light sweet, medium bitter and light acidic with notes of grapefruit, lime, herbs, pine, tea, grass, cookies, rye, bread, tobacco and balanced roast. The mouthfeel is soft and clean with a smooth carbonation. The finish is grapefruity and tea-like with balanced rye and roast. Near medium bodied.
