4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: MAY 18, 2014
Dec 2012 - This is a great black IPA. Sweet pineapple and resin, rich hoppiness balanced perfectly against some soft dark malts. Big flavours up front, giving way to a softly bitter aftertaste. My girlfriend said ’sweet and tropical’. (4.3)
Aug 2013 - (Simcoe, Centennial, Chinook, Zeus, 6.5%) 3 week old bottle. Black with foamy ring of head. Smells roasty, smokey. Taste is roasted barley, some mint, smoke, maybe a little chocolate (although I was eating chocolate with it, so my palate might be off). None of the sweetness or tropical fruit that I enjoyed so much the first time around. It’s like a totally different beer. (3.6)
Mar 2014 - (Simcoe, Columbus, Centennial, 6.3%) Just over 1 month old bottle. Black, foamy magnolia head, some thin lacing. Aroma - hoppy citrus. Body - medium, carbonation medium, slightlly foamy. Taste - toned down grassy Simcoe, toffee Centennial, background caramel. Good balance. Nicely made, without being spectacular. (3.6)

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottled. Pours deep brown with a medium sized tan head. Leaving a fair lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, peach, citrus and licorice notes. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry and solid bitter. Medium bodied, oily text and soft CO2. An excellent black IPA. ★★★★

Bottle from somewhere uninteresting. I love this, this is, to my mind, the nicest black ipa I have had. well tasty.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at Port Street Beer House, Manchester. Black (or very dark reddish brown) with an off-white to beige head. Hoppy! Aroma of pine, citrus, herb and malt with some roasty notes and caramel. Sweet and hoppy with a nice citrussy bitterness in the finish. The hoppy IPA aromas is quite dominating, the black parts are more modest. Refreshing and delicious! (2013-01-26)

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Under the light it has some brown but mostly it looks black with a fizzy tan, lasting but just a thin ring head. Lots of hops on the nose. Citrus grapefruit, pine and grass with roasted malt, caramel. Medium oily body with soft carbonation. Crisp. Tastes of hops and fruit. Sweet peach and malt at first with a bitter hop grass dry citrus pine finish. Every time I go to smell it I can’t help bit take a sip. The smell and the taste are so similar. Leaves the mouth sour and citrus filled. A great drink and a solid IPA. Not as much dark malt or roast as I would have expected though.

6,5%. Flaske 0,33l spandert av Rune under rateseanse i H9 2 Jan 13. Ekstremt dyp amber. Gjørmete. Høyt skum som danner gropform. God, litt tung fruktaroma. Smaken er sitrus. Svakt bitter syrlig ettersmak.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
6.5% version. I remember Black III being ridiculously good, just brilliant thickness. Chewy. This is very delicious. No coins, well, not much. Thick niceness. Actually, this is really good. Really good. Superbly balanced between hops and roasted malt. Rare. Excellent brewing. Cheers Kernel. Sad I missed thier double Black. Come on Kernel, brew us another.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Tasted from the bottle, on 13/11/2012.
Aroma is extra fresh, zesty, not very intense, but quite pleasant.
Taste is classic proper ipa-ish upfront, with just amazing, roasty character in the end.
Aftertaste is very long-lasting, piny and a bit tart, lovely. Bitterness is more than average.

Picked this up on a quick run for Diabolus. Really loving black IPA, need to explore more. This is delicious. I’m serving this as a pre steak and chips drink, which will be followed by a Floretine and an afternoon in the company of Raiseonline. An inevitable defeat at Citeh is also on the cards but more beers like this and I won’t care...
