lusikka (7038) - Tampere, FINLAND - SEP 7, 2013
330 ml bottle, enjoyed at Barcelona. Bottled 31.07.13.
Fresh batch, hops: Simcoe, Centennial, Chinook, Zeus. Pours a pitch black colour with an off-white thick head. Aroma of roasted malts, floral hops and strong herbal grassy notes. Rich flavour of roasted malts, cream, intense floral hops, herbs and tangy citrus. Medium bodied, dry mouthfeel and a long, lingering bitter and citrusy finish. Great stuff.

New batch at 6.5% at the Brewery. A soft green heddgerow buzz - pitch black - cofee/roasty vibes fading to some green hops but not that many... OK but better BIPAs out there.

From Market Row Wines. 6.5% ABV. Bottled 31/07/13 and I drank it not too long after (I neglected to write down the date - mid-August). Pours a cloudy dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is a mix of toast, toffee yet there’s a very fresh, crisp fruity side too. Medium body, lovely feel, nice fine carbonation. There’s a fair amount of dark toffee with some cola, a hint of coffee and a bit of lemon too. Nice lingering bitter-sweet fruity finish. Nice.

Bottle from the Beerhive. 6.5%. Bottled just over 2 weeks ago. Thin head. Very balanced nose. Funk, ripe fruit, little caramel, cough syrup. Taste is very nuanced after 2 bottles, super brief lemon zing then cheesy tart hoppy fruit. A touch o coffee in the middle somewhere. Lovely fresh palate, perfect carbonation. Wow.

Keg at Stormbird- 17th August. Disappointing compared to previous versions. Lots of roasty notes but less piney hops than I've come to expect from this series. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Black colour, Hoppy citrus pine notes along with chocolatey roastiness, nice black ipa, but had better.

UPDATED: MAY 18, 2014
Dec 2012 - This is a great black IPA. Sweet pineapple and resin, rich hoppiness balanced perfectly against some soft dark malts. Big flavours up front, giving way to a softly bitter aftertaste. My girlfriend said ’sweet and tropical’. (4.3)

Aug 2013 - (Simcoe, Centennial, Chinook, Zeus, 6.5%) 3 week old bottle. Black with foamy ring of head. Smells roasty, smokey. Taste is roasted barley, some mint, smoke, maybe a little chocolate (although I was eating chocolate with it, so my palate might be off). None of the sweetness or tropical fruit that I enjoyed so much the first time around. It’s like a totally different beer. (3.6)

Mar 2014 - (Simcoe, Columbus, Centennial, 6.3%) Just over 1 month old bottle. Black, foamy magnolia head, some thin lacing. Aroma - hoppy citrus. Body - medium, carbonation medium, slightlly foamy. Taste - toned down grassy Simcoe, toffee Centennial, background caramel. Good balance. Nicely made, without being spectacular. (3.6)

Bottled. Pours deep brown with a medium sized tan head. Leaving a fair lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, peach, citrus and licorice notes. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry and solid bitter. Medium bodied, oily text and soft CO2. An excellent black IPA. ★★★★

Bottle from somewhere uninteresting. I love this, this is, to my mind, the nicest black ipa I have had. well tasty.

Bottle at Port Street Beer House, Manchester. Black (or very dark reddish brown) with an off-white to beige head. Hoppy! Aroma of pine, citrus, herb and malt with some roasty notes and caramel. Sweet and hoppy with a nice citrussy bitterness in the finish. The hoppy IPA aromas is quite dominating, the black parts are more modest. Refreshing and delicious! (2013-01-26)
