4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at the brewery. Nearly completely black, huge tan head. Aroma of dark roast coffee, dark cocoa, Christmas trees. Taste is burnt espresso, dark chocolate liqueur. Very silly and wonderful mouthfeel. Exactly what a black IPA ought to be.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at 7.2% from Stirchley Wines, Birmingham. Delicious smell - jelly tots and sugared hops. Mouthfeel is pretty thin, but the flavour is pretty good: crispy hops - rich and fresh; followed by a gentle roasty throat coat, which lingers nicely. Very light for the abv, but very tasty indeed.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Keg at CPK, Kernel event. Nice fruit, med hops, not too bitter, citrus, tropical, a bit of rounded sweet chocolate and dark plums. I suppose that I wouldn’t know it was black if i was blind. Barely dark. Wow, this is a black IPA that I like, not just a raunchily hopped porter.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Beer Ritz, Leeds. Poured a murky muddy brown colour with a mid sized lingering tan head. Aroma was dark malts, hops, summer fruits and yeast. Great fullish mouthfeel. Flavour was a winning amalgamation of the above elements with some great hoppage and tasty fruit notes in addition to some roast and dark chocolate notes. Plenty to admire here and a really enjoyable brew.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Kris Wines. Pours murky chocolate brown with a nice khaki head. Aroma is nicely balanced between roast and hops. Coffee and burnt grain mixing subtly in with piney and pineappley hops. Taste is very nice. Lots of roast with liquorice and coffee and burnt caramel. Bitter citric and piney hops with a twist of orange. Burned caramel, liquorice and hoppy bitterness in the after taste. A prime example of a black IPA.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Thanks Craig for sharing this bottle. A lovely beer indeed! A dark brown beer with a large tan head. Fruity nose, pine, citrus and pineapple notes. Tastes a little of coffee with a big roasted malt / barley flavour. Oily mouthfeel with lingering bitterness. Great balance between the malt and citrusy, fruity hops.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled@The Kernel, London. Quite much pitch black colour with a small beige head. Aroma is fruits, wood, some roasted malts as well as nectar. Flavour is quitesimilar with raisins and quite big bitterness as well. Pleasantly balanced. As it warms up it also gets quite much liquorice to it.

3.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours black with off white head. Nose is big on citrous fruit and tropical fruit. Mainly grapefruit, lemon, lime and pine but once acclimatised there’s a bit of lychee, mango too. Taste is strong with roasted malt in there. Sour citrous fruit on tongue. Bit furry, but the backbone is quite mellow. Alcohol, roasted malt and then fruit on the finish. Full bodied and some stickiness in the mouth.
