UPDATED: SEP 27, 2014 330ml bottle from Cheese & Wine Shop, Darlington. 6.7%. Black brown colour, foamy tan head leaving lacing and fruity hop grapefruit aroma with hints of chocolate and roasted malt. Tangy citrusy hop taste with burnt malt and earthy coffee notes, followed by a dry lingering back of the throat bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry roast bitter finish. Very drinkable black IPA.

(Bottle) Pours dark, dark brown with a creamy, nougat coloured head. The aroma holds a typical Kernel hop profile alongside clean, subtle, and balanced roast. Hints of salt liquorice, dew, grass and tropical fruits. The flavour is light sweet to dry, medium to heavily bitter and light acidic with notes of soft roast and grapefruity/grassy hops. The mouthfeel is clean and light tart with a light carbonation. Mega grapefruity finish.. Light to medium carbonation.

Bottle bought @ beermerchants. Pours dark brown with a rather small frothy and bubbly mocha head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly sweet, malty and hoppy with roasted malts, grapefruit juice, dried apricots, pineapple, salty liquorice, resinous wood, black pepper and hints of moist soil. Taste is very tiny sweet and bitter with rotated malts, grapefruit juice, resinous wood, dark roast coffee, grapefruit rinds, tangerines, freshly cut grass, green grapes, orange peal and hints of moist soil. Mouthfeel is round, astringent, very tiny tart and mediu, bodied. Finish is bitter with roasted malts, grapefruit rinds, green grapes, dark roast coffee, freshly cut grass and orange peal. A plain simple tasty BIPA!

Bottle at home - 16/09/12. Pours very dark brown verging on black with a thinnish tan head that retains. Pine, hops, tropical fruits on the nose, a little cocoa. Taste follows, mango, sweet grapefruit, tangerines, light chocolate. Medium bodied, moderate soft carbonation leading to a bitter dry finish with sweet tones. Good stuff.

UPDATED: SEP 23, 2014 Bottle from The Beerhive. 6.3% ABV. Dense dark brown body with a tight tan head. Thick lacing coats the full glass. Aroma of filter coffee, plum, cherry and pine. Flavour of red fruits, milky coffee, wood and lightly roasted malt. Dry, tangy finish. Medium body with a slick, oily texture. Medium carbonation. A tasty beer, though not as dark and rich as other Black IPAs I’ve tried.

Pours Black with a slight brown/reddish hue in the light and a decent tight head. Aroma is a bit of citrus but heavier on the roasted malt, coffe and cocao. Taste is similar as it starts off with a citrus pine flavor, then goes a bit soapy for a second, an dends with coffee, malted cocoa with the pine sap coming back with the aftertaste. Palate is lighter than I expected. Could be richer and a bit more effervescent than I wanted. Still very good and overall one of my favorite in the style. I am a bit biased with the Kernel but know tha tthey do a great job and continue to get better.
