Bottle from the brewery. Dark copper colour. Beige, thin, but creamy head. Aroma is roast malt, chocolate cake, privet leaves. (So, just a bit going off then...). Taste has a hint of salt. Then a big, dry, bitter finish, that slightly overwhelms. Complex.

330 ml bottle from Les Vignerons, served in a nonic half pint glass. Bottled on 05-02-14. Dark brown with some reddish tinges, quite hazy, with a small, bubbly and not very persistent beige head. Roasted and hoppy aroma, notes of freshly burnt coffee beans, bitter dark chocolate, vanilla and liquorice, and then citrusy hops, resin and pine needles. More IPAish than BlackAleish in the mouth, solid and quite high level of bitterness, tiny astringency, lovely and persistent fruity taste. Almost like a chewing on a strawberry and orange candy. Resinous and hoppy aftertaste, not much malty/roasted/chocolaty presence. Soft carbonation, medium body, slightly oily texture. The nose could be better, but it’s probably the best tasting BIPA I’ve ever had so far. Great.

Bottle. Bottled 05 02 14. Black pour, creamy off white head. Aroma is really roasty, piney hoppiness, light fruity hop notes, burnt grain. Taste is really bitter, roasty, burnt toast, lots of burnt toast, almost no sweetness. Palate is med bodied with light carbonation. Okay, but far from the Kernel I love.

Abijen (1336) - ’s-Hertogenbosch, NETHERLANDS - APR 25, 2014
Bottled on 05-02-14. Pours a dark brown beer with a good tan bubbling head. Smells fruity, some hints of chocolate. Tastes grapefruit, the bitterness is over powering the chocolate, coffee or roastiness. Very bitter. Average carbo, thin body and a dry oily texture.

Bottle (330 ml). Bottled on 03-02-2014. Dark brown with a small persistent beige head and some lacing. Aroma is of roasted malt, chocolate brownies, piney hops, grapefruit and floral notes. Taste is also of roasted malt, pine, grapefruit, light caramel/malt and light bitterness. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Slightly oily mouthfeel. Dry finish. Good Black IPA. Not too stout-ish despite the chocolate presence. Nice balance. Not as stellar as some other beers from The Kernel, but still a pretty nice one.

It was 3 years ago when I had this at the brewery with mesandsim, still remember what a moment this was for me. I do love the pants off black ipa’s. Almost black with a big bubbled pale tan head. Smells awesome. Big hop notes, grass that you stand on and that you smoke, grapefruit, chocolate malts drifting through. Lovely mouthfeel, perfectly balanced, love this stuff.

Bottled 05.02.14. Hops: Simcoe, Columbus, Centennial. Strong floral, fresh hop smell - less accentuated on the tongue, just a smooth palate. Finish is bitter coffee. A lovely representative of a new class of beer. Rated by BrewTom

Aroma: Dark chocolate, coffee, plum, mango. Appearance: Dark brown, opaque, minimal tan head. Taste: Coffee, grapefruit, mild bitterness and a soft roastiness. Palate: Medium body, slightly oily texture, medium carbonation and a soft warming finish. Overall: A mild, very drinkable, well-balanced Black IPA.
