5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Bottle at home, 12th November. Pours to form a reasonable head, black in colour, hoppy fruity and aromatic in aroma, this is following through in the taste which is a perfect balance and mouthful. Fantastic beer to savour

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Shared bottle at BrewDog Edinburgh. Very dark ruby brown with a medium beige head. Smell is amazing, prominent pine, some fruit - maybe apples, pears, no citrus. Very very subtle dark chocolate, almost indistinguishable. Taste is initially bitter, slightly roasty complimented by a resinous hop note. Undertone of coffee grounds. Finish is rich and smoky and warming, contrasting with a persistent grapefruit hop note. Really amazing beer, complex and very well-balanced.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Under the light it has some brown but mostly it looks black with a fizzy tan, lasting but just a thin ring head. Lots of hops on the nose. Citrus grapefruit, pine and grass with roasted malt, caramel. Medium oily body with soft carbonation. Crisp. Tastes of hops and fruit. Sweet peach and malt at first with a bitter hop grass dry citrus pine finish. Every time I go to smell it I can’t help bit take a sip. The smell and the taste are so similar. Leaves the mouth sour and citrus filled. A great drink and a solid IPA. Not as much dark malt or roast as I would have expected though.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at the brewery. Nearly completely black, huge tan head. Aroma of dark roast coffee, dark cocoa, Christmas trees. Taste is burnt espresso, dark chocolate liqueur. Very silly and wonderful mouthfeel. Exactly what a black IPA ought to be.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Dark clean brown and a nice tan head. Aroma is very nice, malty but enough hops for sure. Mango and more. Taste is funky, balanced overall with some sharp notes. Nice smooth body. Very good, especially for a black ipa. (At the De Molen brewery tasting.)

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours black and looks thick with a small off white head. Nose is candy and caramel, small degree of hops but not what I would expect from a black IPA. Taste is a good amount of hop bitterness with a decent sweetness for balance, perhaps this is my first english style black IPA? It seems a bit more malty. Light body, crisp and clean. This beer is very good.

6.5% version. I remember Black III being ridiculously good, just brilliant thickness. Chewy. This is very delicious. No coins, well, not much. Thick niceness. Actually, this is really good. Really good. Superbly balanced between hops and roasted malt. Rare. Excellent brewing. Cheers Kernel. Sad I missed thier double Black. Come on Kernel, brew us another.

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2014
Dec 2012 - This is a great black IPA. Sweet pineapple and resin, rich hoppiness balanced perfectly against some soft dark malts. Big flavours up front, giving way to a softly bitter aftertaste. My girlfriend said ’sweet and tropical’. (4.3)
Aug 2013 - (Simcoe, Centennial, Chinook, Zeus, 6.5%) 3 week old bottle. Black with foamy ring of head. Smells roasty, smokey. Taste is roasted barley, some mint, smoke, maybe a little chocolate (although I was eating chocolate with it, so my palate might be off). None of the sweetness or tropical fruit that I enjoyed so much the first time around. It’s like a totally different beer. (3.6)
Mar 2014 - (Simcoe, Columbus, Centennial, 6.3%) Just over 1 month old bottle. Black, foamy magnolia head, some thin lacing. Aroma - hoppy citrus. Body - medium, carbonation medium, slightlly foamy. Taste - toned down grassy Simcoe, toffee Centennial, background caramel. Good balance. Nicely made, without being spectacular. (3.6)

Bottle from the Beerhive. 6.5%. Bottled just over 2 weeks ago. Thin head. Very balanced nose. Funk, ripe fruit, little caramel, cough syrup. Taste is very nuanced after 2 bottles, super brief lemon zing then cheesy tart hoppy fruit. A touch o coffee in the middle somewhere. Lovely fresh palate, perfect carbonation. Wow.
