330ml bottle. Black-brown colour, foamy biege head and aroma of floral hoppy grapefruit. Taste is dark malt, spicy tones balanced with sublime resiny hop bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry lingering bitter finish. Very drinkable.

33 cl bottle, Sheffield, UK via The Dram Shop. Looks exactly like cola. Strong minty-hop aroma, resin and some roasted chocolate as well. Sweet burnt flavour, then a wave of resin fills the mouth with a long bitter finish.

Bottled. Deep murky reddish brown with a foamy beigeish brown head. Aroma is sweet malts, some fruits, liquorice and quite floral as well. Flavour is mild coffeeish toasted notes along with fruits, liquorice, some resin and mild wooden notes. Hides the alcohol very well. Pleasant as most of the Kernels beers.

PotjeBier (1640) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - JUL 16, 2012
33 cl bottle @ home (label says just Black, not Double Black, but also 9.8% - BB 14/08/14). Color is clear, very dark brown, not quite black. Beige head with some retention. Aroma’s: strong resin/citrus, herbal, salmiak, acidic, some roasted malt. Flavor: drop/licorice, herbal, medium bitter with a malty backbone. Prickly alcohol feel, medium body. Finishes with roast and resin, but not overly bitter.

Bottle, beermetchants.com. Immediate spicy hop nose with rich chocolate and coffee tones. Soft and warming on the tongue with dark fruit flavours and grapefruit to contrast. Rum and sherry hints mingle in, the finish is dry and full flavoured with more richness coming through. One to savour and enjoy.

Bottle pours dark amber with mahogany hues and full fluffy tan head. The aroma offers up a nice nearly bold level of pine and grapefruit like hops with some earthy dank hops and spicy hops that aren’t far behind. If there’s roastiness in the aroma I’m really not getting any. The taste has firm chewy yummy dank earthy to spicy hops to start that just seem to hit the spot. Those notes are followed by some grapefruit like citrus hops and a good deal of resiny bitter pine hops. What roasted malts are here are well off in the background and seem to leave the big bold drool inducing hoppiness alone to run amuck in the flavor playing field. I dig it. Yes, my very first Kernel beer and I am “in”, all in baby! Well done.

Black with a lasting light brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt and rather hoppy - pine. Flavor is quite sweet and very bitter. Dry and very bitter finish. 160212

I got this from a friend who went to London and got it for me (thanks Yannine !) The first thing you notice is the aroma, WAUW ! This is a bold beer, tons of hops, caramel and a touch of chocolate (maybe a bit of coffee). You do smell the bitterness (from the hops). It has a beautyfull black beer with a mokka cream top, looks very nice. Taste : this is a bold beer of 9.8% and you taste it. You get the bitterness from the hops, with a roasted coffee (with a touch of chocolate). the texture is very big, sticky and bready. this is not a light beer, it’s big, bold and a sipper. But it’s a wonderfull beer, love it !
