2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: SEP 10, 2016 £2.79 9/20 Taste is mixture of hops and exotic citrus fruits but these flavours aren’t overly strong and it’s easy to drink, quite well balanced. Smooth. Probably a bit too boozy for me. Appearance is cloudy, white with little bits of sediment floating about. Worth giving a go, but wouldn’t buy again.
Second bottle - 11/20 enjoyed it a bit more, but doesn’t quite work. Passion fruit over powering.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottled on 16.03.16 so still a fresh bottle (label explicitly says "please drink fresh" - obviously recommendable with these ultra-fragrant modern IPAs) but at an ABV of 6.9%, I guess the different batches all came out differently in terms of alcohol strength. Very thick and frothy, hops-enhanced, cream white, dense and regular head over a hazy ’old gold’ coloured beer with slight peachy hue and a ’fog’ of yeast bits divided throughout, turning into a muddy, ochre pool of yeast and proteins with the deposit added. Pungent, dank aroma of all good things IPA associated with Simcoe: yellow grapefruit peel, pine resin, toasted onion, spruce, toasted bread, curry powder, some stale urine coming from the hops, roast tomato peel, melon somewhere, lime blossom, fried chicken. Crisp onset of green olive-like umami flavors paired with light, basic sourishness and just a tiny hint of peachy sweetishness, but the hop bitterness (without saltiness) becomes apparent from the start and only grows as the liquid travels over the tongue, bridging a straightforward but well-placed, lightly bready pale malt character, again only very vaguely sweetish and only very gently carbonated, and debouching into a very aromatic, bittering finish with lovely retronasal sensations of pine needle, dried grapefruit peel and toasted onion (or even roast garlic) on the one hand and a spicy, pungent, peppery, ’lively’ and long-lasting, yet in all fairly ’gentle’ bitterness on the other hand with only a thin trail of malty breadiness peeping through, the breadiness being enhanced by the yeast here. After swallowing, a lovely resinous and piney hoppiness coats the throat. A bit rough on the edges perhaps, could do with better ’looks’, but in terms of aroma and flavor, this is a more than exemplary IPA - but then, I had not expected anything less from this renowned London brewery, which has inspired so many others already in its relatively short span of existence. I do not know if it is necessary to spawn so incredibly many variants on the same theme as this brewery does, but it sure is a good exercise to get acquainted with the fragrant world of ’new’ hops in great detail. By itself: great IPA in most respects.

Bottle shared. Murky golden with white head that leaves a little ring. Lime, lots of dank hops, marijuana, light sweat, sweet malts with some caramel and biscuits, a bit of yeast. Mostly massive hops though. Medium sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with a bit syrupy feel. Another great Kernel IPA.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
330 ml. split by 4 @ “Sir Goatie McGoat S&G Tasting”. Thank you Mathieu87 and/or PriorL! Bottled 16.03.16. Dark hazy orange with a creamy white head. Nose is dank yoghurt yeast & sugar. Taste is sweet milky yeast, candy, sugar, low dank hop. Yeasty body. Too much yeast in this example, really takes this one down for me, it’s a shame. Might be just this specific bottle.
