Bottle from Beer Ritz, Leeds. Pours a muddy, murky reddish brown. I actually thought I’d screwed up and made it all yeasty, but I hadn’t. One of the ugliest beers visibly I’ve had for a long time. Aroma is citrus, tropical fruits, spice and a touch of caramel. Taste is a bit sweetish up front, with a bitter citrus note, rye spice and a touch of breadiness. Medium body, moderately dry and a long flavourful bitter finish. Classic Kernel - very technically good but a little soporific and unexciting.

Bottle. Excellent soft mouthfeel and a likewise excellent balance between a caramelly malt base and a resiny hopping that is strong enough to assert itself but still decides to accompany the malts from a distance.

Half. Deep cloudy colouring. Frothy but quickly vanishing head. Good example of a heavy rye ale. The tap claims 6.9% rather than the 7.3% suggested here. Very doable for a half.

2015-09-24. Hazy dark amber with nice orange highlights, foamy beige head and lace. 3++ Aroma has a pleasant hop melange, mild green herbaceous hops blend with oily citrus and orange peel. Flavour is pleasantly hoppy, nice oily citrus character. 7+ Average plus to medium bodied palate, moderate carbonation. Moderate bitterness throughout, supportive malt is subtle but present. Rather nice. On tap at Holborn Whippet, London, UK.

Cloudy red beer with a thin beige head and a typical rye beer aroma with a grapefruity hit too. Flavour follows suit. It’s lighter than expected but it’s still very tasty. There’s a bit of an earthy quality to it in the malt and a nice hoppy aftertaste.

Draft at Cask Pub. Hazy maroon volor, thick beige head with solid lacing. Aroma of spiced pine. Taste has spiced, bitter burnt brown bread. No amber ale is hopped like this. This is a rye IPA.

330ml bottle as ’The Kernel London Brick Red Rye Ale’, Centennial Simcoe. Bottled 01/09/15 at 6.9%. Very dark reddy brown, huge foamy tan head. Aroma is grassy, minty, pine, Turkish Delight, toffee apple and plum. Body is medium, tingly carbonation, smooth. Taste has a sweet toffee backbone with grass, pine, chalk. Salty, dry, rye spice finish. Quite bitter. Nice, balanced.

Fat @ Harp, London.
