3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Hefeweizen milky with a fine, well-retained foam. All the hop lusciousness on the nose I’ve come to expect from The Kernel; armpit, grapefruit juice, papaya. Excellent, soapy, well-squeezed hop flavour with humid tropical, floral and grapefruit notes over a cushion of malted milk biscuit and peanut husk. A snort of retronasal brine; green stems and chlorophyll on the burp. Still looking for a pale Kernel beer that’s anything less than top 100 material.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle; home, bought from brewery. Poured slightly hazy orange-bronze with off-white lacing. Aroma is straw, mango, oranges, nice btiterness, fresh bread. Taste is loads of mango, oranges, incredibly drinkable, almost on soda levels but better than soda, loads of orange zest around the tongue, the bitterness is stunning, just a nice big hoppy beer and definitely a stlye which other breweries can use. Why drink boring brown bitter when this shit is ready for the spring; summer and the cricket? I’m game for drinking this and watching cricket. Beams me into the tropics. Lovely fruity finish, crisp, balanced and poised. No chemical residue after-taste here and this is the way forward. Bottling condition is stunning!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
500ml bottle from the Rake, drunk at home, 14th Jan 2011. Hazy orange with a finger of white head. Nose is really herby with garlic and spring onion. Flavour has orangey notes alongside considerable earthiness and mineral hints. Excellent body, a good balance between robustness and drinkability. Another good beer from the Kernel.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle at The Kernel brewery. Evan seems like a very nice bloke. On my birthday too (then, not now). Murky yellow with a thin white head. Had next to the citra got to say I prefer that but nothing short of superb again. Awesome condition as expected. Awesome all round. This was my first day on Kernel beer, damn I wish I could buy these round my way. Great work.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500ml bottle (best before 16 November 2011) @ Christmas tasting on 28 December 2010. Who’d have thought it? A Kernel Pale Ale packed with fresh, juicy, assertive hops. This one majors on tangy orange peel, especially on the nose where a fantastic aromatic whiff leaps out at you. A bit more grapefruit and resin on the palate. Appearance is golden amber with a haze. Well up to standard.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
500ml bottle - stolen from Kernel Brewery during RBESG2011. BB2011/11/16
7 Lovely spicy and sharp hoppy aroma, spring onions and garlic, some slightly eco grains too, but hpos dominate. Even though I poured quite carefully, the yeaster of the two glasses was unsurprisingly yeastier in aroma.
4 Rich orange, fizzy pour, and a frothy head. Bottom half of the bottle was cloudier, hefeweizen-like, and had a more persistent head.
7 Big fruity body, but plenty of malt to back it up. Fruits are almost lychee-like in the clear pour. Cloudy pour has more nettles in the retronasals.
4 Crisp carbonation. Spicy finish, almost has a peppery burn to it. Slightly citrussy, and generally fruity too, but a nice sweet and refreshing malty finish too. The cloudier one was fuller in the mouth.
15 Burps fantastically, just pure aromatic fruity hops. Great balance. In the end, we mixed the cloudier and clear pour together, and it gave a great balance between the fullness and the sharpness. Good one.
