Tap. Shakespeares, Sheffield. As Kernel Pale Ale Cascade Simcoe. 5.2%. Hazy, dark yellow. Kernel swede. Nose has the malts upfront, unusually. A bit pale and pilsener-ish. Some vanilla, too. (Is this the right keg for the tap?). Hops kick in with some pineapple and peach stone. Bit of Simcoe grass. Taste is crisp bitter, and light dry. Crisp mouthfeel. Light bitter finish. The most un-Kernel like Kernel pale ale Iíve had, in a pub that serves their beer right all the time. Maybe Iím hormonal...

Pours an amber-orange color, completely hazed with a huge, spongy white head. Even when collapsed, the beer is covered by a thick lacing throughout. The nose is bursting of fruity aromas, which get enhanced in their rich appearance by a piney dankness. Big chunks of luscious orange, papaya and tangerine define the hops, as well as wet water coated lemon zest. This creates a perfumy, yet zappy interplay, gently balanced by slighty skunky, crackery malts, directly adding to the depth of the fruits. Has a lively carbonation among an enjoyable light body. Exhibits a smooth mouthfeel, with more than enough flavors to keep the taste interesting, while drinking utmost easy. Produces an aqueous softness during its beginning, together with soothing white bread malts, while the hops immediately create a crisp lemon bitterness, once getting detectable on the palate, while gently blending into the beers foundation. A herbal grassiness underneath its lemon quality, together with ripe orange, gets handled by toffee malts, again with an aqueous softness to it. Hops do not stop to evolve on the palate though, exhibiting a pungent, fruit accompanied dryness, which stays on the palate for ages, without turning one-dimensional bitter though. Instead, the beers initial fruitiness from the nose gets reflected, even during this late stage of drinking, creating a pleasant complexity within the beers dry finish. This is amazing! It drinks so easy, I could finish the whole bottle within a few minutes, if it wasnít for the beers ridiculously long lasting finish, straightening out the drinking tempo almost to slowly sipping. The steady developing dryness is extremely enjoyable, bringing back fruity hop qualities from the nose, gently fading away with a satisfying, multi layered lemon dryness remaining recognizable. While it is composed perfectly, the beer drinks outstandingly smooth and easy, due to its soft aqueous quality, blending into balancing malts, always soft on the palate. That makes it perfect to be paired with a dish, while being certainly able to convince on its own as well.

Quite good, a bit more earthiness than fruitiness.

Bottle from a trade with madmitch76. Pours light hazed golden with a big creamy white head.Aroma is fruity, orange, lemon with some herbs and spice. Taste is moderate fruity, light bitter fresh tangerine, some nice citrussy notes at the end. Not exactly an eye opener, more a straight forward beer by Kernel. Good enough for me.
