4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark brown almost black colour. Weak light brown creamy head. Aroma is malty, fruity (prunes, tropical fruits) with tobacco notes. Flavor is malty too with liquorice, coffee, dark chocolate and light pepper tones, ending in a smooth and long chocolatey finish. Medium to full bodied.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Black with a firm beige head. Aromas are peppery with rich coffee, floral berries and some pine notes. Nutty with yeast and hints of liquorice. Flavours are coffee and dark chocolate with liquorice and plenty of pepper. Some caramel with arid, woody dry notes. Grapefruit, green pine and coffee bitterness. Very good.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle; black, merest hint of amber at the edges; aroma of coffee and American (?) hops; flavours of fruit, espresso coffee and chocolatey malt; like no porter Iíve previously tasted - much fruitier, faintly exotic; excellent

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
50 cl bottle at the brewery. It pours a dark brown/black colour with a medium off-white head. Light roasted malt nose with hints of wood. Taste is lightly roasted malt with a note of coffee and a touch of acidity. Body is medium with good carbonation. Overall, I was definitely expecting something more tasty from The Kernel.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from the legendary Kris Wines. Pours deep brown with a medium tan frothy head. The nose is mild chocolate, leather, some roasted grains and coffee. The taste is semi-sweet chocolate, lactose sweetness, some charred earthiness and grain. Hints of coffee and vinous fruits on the slightly dry finish. Medium body, soft carbonation. Smooth. Pretty good, though not a standout in The Kernelís stable of stellar brews.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Ninaís Mini Mart, Edinburgh 5.5%
Pitch black, hardly any light through, fairly big frothy tan head that dissipates with some lacing
Aroma - rich roasted malts, soft burnt wood, quite meaty complex malts, yeasty, some bovril, touch of very dark ground coffee, almost an aroma of some weaker impys
Taste - as the aroma - rich dark malts, some more burnt wood and less of the meatiness, yeast is noticeable, strong rich flavour for abv, Quite bitter roast, background of bitter hops, no fruitness or choclate here for me. Intense flavour but doesnít get over burnt which is good
Palate - soft carb, medium body. Palate is dry, fairly bitter and rich dark robust roast. Finish - as main flavour again, particularly dry, flavour gently fades.
Overall - The intensity of taste is much higher than to be expected at 5.5%. As the roast malts are very rich, the drinkability is lower than to be expected at this abv - itís a more of a sipper. Itís good, really well made, but Iím wanting more sweet dark malts to counterbalance the rich soft burnt roast.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours darkest brown with little head. Smells of sweet chocolate and a little malt. Light and fruity on first taste but with an almost cocoa powder finish. A bit thin but pretty perfect apart from that.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle direct from the brewery. Pours thin black/very dark brown with small beige head. Nose is very good. Strong chocolate and rich coffee. On the deep inhale thereís also roasted malt, caramel and bit of dark fruit, but subtle. Taste is dark coffee, hints of wood, touch smokey with a long black coffee finish. Body is light. A nice simple porter exactly as it should be.
