12 oz. bottle. Deep mahogany color with thin off white head. Nose is mostly oak with traces of molasses. Flavor is oak, brown sugar and light anise. The oak is really nice in this brew. Light Christmas spice in the finish. Medium body with the right level of carbonation. Nicely made.

Dark amber nice lacing. Smells of toffee and tobacco. Brown sugar. Taste is sweet and oily. Very weird burnt oak. Mild hop presence very esthery. Weak sweet finish. Not a fan.

12 oz. bottle. Dark, muddy brown with a medium, creamy, off-white head. Aroma of chocolate pudding, cinnamon, lactose, and toffee. Very sweet flavor, with no discernible hop profile. Medium body, chalky, and clean. Overall, this is a very dry and spicy ale. Not bad!

Sadly not that good. A bit more sour than I would’ve thought, I assume an effect of the oak aging. Josh brought this one back with him from Mississippi in 2013.

Not bad, but did not seem fully rounded and balanced. It also did not seem to favorable off balanced... A miss for me. Lots of barrel alcohol characteristics but not nothing super unique. Similar to a watery Central Waters barrel aged beer.

Bottle. This is a solid strong ale with some good spicing and alcohol warmth.

Augusta, Ga - Toast Wine & Beverage - 12 oz bottle. Murky dark brown pour, sticky khaki colored head that sticks around a while and leaves a light trail of lacing. Aroma has a strong bourbon presence, hints of molasses. Flavor is full of bottom shelf bourbon, not much else. Some molasses, a hint of cherry cola sweetness. Mouthfeel is thick and sticky. Too much bourbon sweetness to allow this to be enjoyable.

Cask. Deep brown pour with minimal khaki head. The aroma big bourbon, so much so that no much else comes through. Taste is sweet caramel, dark fruits, and then booze of the bourbon variety. The palate came out a bit weak and watery. Compared to some of the other reviews it may have simply been this cask, so might have to give it another try from the bottle.

Growler from The Beer Growler in Atlanta, served in a St. Bernardus snifter. "an American Strong Ale brewed with spices and aged in Jim Beam bourbon oak barrels" that are being used for the 2nd time, imparting a more subtle bourbon character, according to Red Brick.. Pours very dark reddish-brown, clear with a moderate size tan head. The head reduces to a partial coat and ring too soon, but then hangs on, leaving attractive lacing on the glass. Disclaimer: I don’t like bourbon and think a number of beers have been harmed by over-exposure to bourbon barrels. Nonetheless, this ale has a fantastic aroma that seems at first to consistent almost entirely of sweet bourbon. There’s also a solid malt component, a note of orange peel, some spices, and a trace of oak: these all mesh completely with the bourbon effects. The taste is also exceptional: high complexity; very flavorful yet not challenging; and superb bitter/sweet balance. O: Art, science and luck all came together in this beer from a brewery known for making good but not great beers. With a marvelous aroma; great flavor, and high complexity, The Lost Years is highly recommended. Red Brick: please make more!

Draft at Sybarite Pig in Boca Raton. Tulip. Pours a golden brown with a thin white head. Medium lacing. Overall aroma of wood, bourbon and spice. Taste up front was bourbon, oak, charcoal, with light spices. The hops balanced very nicely. Finishes slightly malty. Very good Strong Ale.
