COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Ships Rations is a hybrid of old and new- with a twist. It shares some traits with old English IPAs, specifically the sparkling carbonation and the dry crisp finish. It is like modern IPAs in that it makes exclusive use of recently developed strains of high-alpha acid hops, specifically Citra & Simcoe. But it takes a lighter hand on hop character than most modern IPAs, which allows some interesting special ingredients to be incorporated. These exotic ingredients are Ginger, Molasses and Chinese Sugar Crystals. These ingredients are reminiscent of the Far East and the English colonial period- when spices, sugar, and molasses were loaded onto English ships- ships that returned loaded with Ale. The ginger helps to create a powerful aroma of cardamom on the nose (putting the "I" in IPA) and is perhaps more felt than tasted -as it creates a synergistic effect with the hops- increasing the perception of bitterness and leaving a pleasant, almost hot, bitter burn on the palette. The molasses add color and complexity, and the Chinese sugar crystals help to lighten the body and create a rather dry beer.

Aromaspicy, slightly salty, herbal green hop notes, fresh cut ginger.
Appearance slight haze, amber bottom with white mid top.
Flavor and Palate : mellow mid with fairly low carbonation. Ginger adds spice to this rather flat brew.

Bottle [330ml] shared with HogTownHarry, JoeMcPhee, jercraigs & mabel -- c/o JoeMcPhee. Pours a cloudy golden-orange with a small diminishing frothy white head. Aroma and flavour of diacytl, grain, caramel malt and light hops. Rough finish. Average bodied. Not very good.

2013-04-12. Lightly hazy dark orange body with a tiny beige head. Big fresh gingery aroma. Flavour is a bit rough, fairly bitter hops blend with the ginger not entirely well. Average to light bodied palate. Not bad, but not really to my tastes either. Shared by JoeMcPhee

Bottle. Deep amber pour - thin head. The aroma is a little bit gingery with some odd character. A bit of rancid character and a touch of fruit. Kind of dirty as well but okay. Assertive bitterness - meh. Not for me

Tap, at the opening, rating the number 2 as well because it was better as I am pretty sure that 1 and 2 will be under the same rating because 2 is the dry hopped verison of 1. But they were not a lot of similarities between the two, 1 was fairly flat in flavour, it had some english and earthiness and it was drinkable, the 2 was very much like a IPA. more american then an english IPA. 2 was very fruity, kind of tuttifruity like, it had a nice bitterness and there was a nice spice finish and it was quite enjoyable, recommend trying both.

I had a half pint of this at the debut. It was simply labeled Ships Rations, #2. I will add #1 when I gather more details. It tapped a hazy golden, and poured about a half inch of creamy froth into the glass. Good head retention here with lasting carbonation. What struck me about this beer was the inviting aroma. It was very perfumey, and came off as quite pretty. Candy, spice, and a heavy dose of floral aromas come through and hint at citrus. Medium light bitterness with matching sweetness makes this a well balanced effort. The 6.5 % is not noticable in terms of heat, and the ginger gives a pleasant bite. Medium bodied, nice zesty finish. A solid first effort from this nano.
