(On tap) Cloudy brown with a warm tint of red and an off-white head. Fantastic, complex aroma of wood, raisins and alcohol. Medium-bodied and almost flat with very complex flavours - again raisins, wood and perhaps a little Port. Short and dry finish. Lovely. 21 IBU. 240108

Cask. Dark brown beer with a thin tan head. Sweet chocolatey aroma, some toffee, some caramel, and a touch of vanilla as well. Faint spicy hop aroma underneath all of the malts. Slightly cardboardy flavour, but there is lots of toast and light molasses as well. Flavour is very malty, molasses, brown sugar, toasted nuts and a touch of chocolate near the finish.

Part of the tasting tray shared with my lovely wife at the brewpub in Christchurch, enjoyed with the charcouterie plate and cheese plate. Gorgeous deep mahogany red colour. Aroma is faintly smokey, with notes of molasses, chocolate, and fig jam. Silky palate with flavours of burnt malt, molasses, prunes, and a subtle spiciness in the finish. Nice bitterness that lingers long after the swallow. This reminded me of an old-school classic porter, and for that reason was my favourite of the lot.

Part of the tasting rack at the brewpub. On cask. Pours dark brown ruby with a tan head. Molasses, brown sugar, coffee, roast malt, and hops on the nose. The flavor is similar, with aniseed, dark fruits, a syrupy mouthfeel and dry, bitter finish. Good complexity and balance. Medium bodied and very smooth.

On handpull at the brewpub. A sessionable Old Ale - is there such a thing. Toasted malt and caramel flavours. Greta smooth palate.

I’ve had this one in New Zealand on my honeymoon. Visited the Twisted Hop and drank it there.
Certainly a nice strong ale.
