Hogshead Bitter is a very traditional style of beer using the finest Maris Otter malt, combined with luscious cane sugars complimented by delicious, fruity Bramling cross hops to give a malty, crisp and hoppy flavoured ale. It is one of our more popular seasonal ales and goes superbly with ham and light cheeses

500ml brown bottle. Tastes like a home brew made with too much sugar. Green apple, wet flannel, caramel. Not good. Thin. I’d rather have a home brew.

Bottle from Tesco. Poured a hazy copper, with a halo of white head. Aroma of vanilla, flat malt and wet dog. Candy sugar in the flavour, with apples and grain. Finish was copper, wet grass and funk.

A mid copper coloured beer with a thick white head. A light malty aroma, nutty and caramel with a background hint of fruity hop. A medium dry mouthfeel. A mouth filling malty flavour, nutty, and loads of medium sweet caramel and brown sugar, toffee and butterscotch, but in a good way. This is followed by a mild bitterness from pithy citrusy hops. The hoppiness lasts into a lingering finish.

500ml bottle from Home Bargains. Pours chestnut with thin white head. Not a lot of aroma but pleasant, almost too sweet taste. Brown sugar, raisins and bit of prune. Slightly bitter aftertaste which comes as a bit of a surprise. Decent ale for the price.

GoufCustom (929) - HONG KONG - JUN 12, 2014

500 ml bottle bought at Wellcome Superstore in Sheung Shui.

Clear amber copper colour; Three-quarter finger head and off-white foam which faded in 40 seconds; Small sticky lacing and fizzy carbonation; Aroma of ale malt, with strong burnt toffee, caramel, toast, molasses, yeast and very light grass; Very light sweet taste of light malt, with strong burnt toast, burnt toffee, caramel, molasses notes, bread, very dry biscuits, light yeast, faint lemon and very light bitter grassy hops; Light body, thin and slightly slick palate; Mouth feel is fairly light ale maltyness with very strong burnt toasty and burnt toffee characters, really set the tasting tone with matching strong bread and dry biscuits. Solid brew!... Hoppiness is light grass nose, and faint lemony grass in taste. Bitterness is very low-fi in the background for an abrupt, very light astringent finish; Quite dry after taste. Very easy to mouth.

Comments: This is a solid and quite impressive Bitter, with really dominating burnt toast and toffee maltyness dictates. Quite memorable and certainly enjoyable. Good in a simple way.
