Wanted to try it because of the Masham connection. Bit thin for me, not much depth to the flavour. Got the raisin and spice notes, but didn’t do much for me.

Copper colour with white head. Aromas of spices and fruits, especially damson plums. Taste is lightly malty but with quite strong cinnamon and raisin flavours. Also touches of lime and toffee, with some grassy hop notes. Finish is dominated by a sweet taste reminiscent of marzipan. In fact, the beer tastes a little like Stollen in a glass. A rather curious brew, it would work better if the flavours came together more. Not entirely convincing. Perhaps it would work better at a higher ABV (it tastes a little watery) and with more yeast and hop flavours to balance the sweetness.

Bottle from local Tesco in Eastbourne. Pours out in a hazy brown colour with low head and flat body. Aroma of cake, malt and whisky. Taste of cake, hops, straw, biscuits, caramel and light malt. Smooth to drink. Enjoyed it.

rather intensive malty and spicy aroma... the taste is very spicy with notes of citrus peel, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice... light hopping... dry sweet aftertaste... nice ESB...

Bottled, 500ml from Millets Farm Shop, Frilford, Oxon. Orange copper colour with off white head. Quite a smooth, lightly caramelised beer, some toffee notes with a reasonably delicate spicing note although cinammon is the stand out flavour. Sweetish, fruity. It’s quite reasonable.

500 ml bottle bought at Wellcome Superstore in Sheung Shui.

Clear amber copper colour; Half finger head and white foam which faded in 30 seconds; Small sticky lacing and very fizzy carbonation; Fragrant and sweet aroma of ale malt, with strong raisins, figs, damsons, grape soda, caramel, strong toffee, strong cinnamon, light yeast and faint grass; Light sweet taste of moderate malt, with roastyness, strong nuts, caramel, toast, molasses notes, dry biscuits, strong yeast, light lime, bitter hops and light grass; Close to light body, thin but slick palate; Mouth feel is quite amber malty with strong roasted nut taste resembling cashews and macademia. Also good toastyness and dry biscuits, and there’s not much fruity elements here as the strong aroma suggests. Interesting… Hoppiness is cinnamon and faint grass nose. Light lime and grass in taste. Bitterness is moderate for an abrupt, light tasted grassy finish; Quite dry after taste. Easy and biscuity to mouth.

Comments: This is a very polarizing beer with nice but totally unrelated aroma and taste: its strong fragrant dark fruits and spicy nose tries to bridge with the roasty bready malt taste. Together they are at odds with each other and it feels a bit awkward. Interesting but in the end just average.
