DeanF (285), Paris, France Jul 13, 2009 Pours a dark brown but seems to have very little head from the bottles I drank. Taste is an excellent blend of barley and malts, some sweetness. A very good ale to drink down all day and all night. asheft (1374), Marburg, Germany Jun 28, 2009 [bottle]
Dried fruit aroma that includes prune, with brown sugar and a touch of liquorice. Opaque, clear garnet-brown-black. Sweet caramel flavour with some nutty notes and a touch of sourness. Bitterness is medium and balanced by some spiciness. Liquorice, apple, and pear notes. Medium body, nutty-bitter finish. wheresthepath (523), Buckinghamshire, England Jun 6, 2009 [Bottle from Asda, High Wycombe] Pours an opaque ruby-brown with a thin beige head. Smells rich, malty and inviting - you can imagine following this around like the Bisto kid follows gravy! Smooth and creamy mouthfeel, with just enough of a prickle to prevent it becoming cloying. An oaky flavour at first, then cocoa, with vinous hints behind and some roasty malts to finish. A very good, mellow, relaxing beer which (like Jennings Snecklifter and many of Adnams’ beers) challenges CAMRA’s perception that bottled beer needs bottle-conditioning to be good. c9 MitchWayne (264), Kokkola, Finland May 29, 2009 Really good old ale, fruity, roasty and malty. Easy to drink but not boring, good stuff for a session. Jblauvs (531), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA May 29, 2009 dark brown pour with slight offwhite head. nice toffee roast and banana, malt. Mouth is roasty, some banana and spice, some dark cherry presence, overall very nice Ceebs25 (217), Naperville, Illinois, USA May 23, 2009 12 oz bottle. Fairly thick and malty aroma. A good amount of roasted English toffee and English grain malts, minor cola, brown sugar, earthy hops, cherries, and some other mild fruity scents, maybe banana as the description suggests but its not clearly evident. Pretty nice pour with a medium sized, carbonated cream head, decent retention, medium appearing body, and crimson amber in color. A fair amount of carbonation on the feel, not biting, but it distracts from the flavors a touch. More fruity on the flavor notes than expected, and slightly different tasting than I was expecting, in a good way. Cherries is a big player along with other unidentifiable medium sweet fruits, plus roasted malted malted malts, brown sugar, and actually more bitter than I thought it was going to be with a subtle earthy English hop guiding this one well. Overall, I didn’t find this ole ale too spectacular, but really not too shabby. WVHouseofBeer (339), Morgantown, West Virginia, USA May 14, 2009 Aroma of roasted malt and banana, with just about the same taste, only with some chocolate mixed in. A pretty decent beer. LC djd07 (724), Houston, Texas, USA May 1, 2009 Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a small off white head that quickly diminishes to nothing. The aroma is a dark fruit malt with raisin and licorice. Thin mouthfeel with a bitter fruit prune with a lingering yeasty finish. A strange old ale but easy to drink from Theakston.
