GG (1612), NorCal, California, USA Nov 14, 2007 I’ve passed up this beer at BevMo plenty of times. After hearing that it won’t be distributed anymore over hear I figured I’d better scoop it up while I can. Price is a bit on the high side, but lets see what it has to offer. Aroma is a nice combo of soft caramel, light smoke, wood and dark fruit. It would have received higher scores for me if it were a bit stronger, but still very nice. Appearance is a purpleish/red color, clear with a sticky head with nice lacing. Flavor is figs, alcohol, molasses, and toffee without being overly sweet in any way. A very nice beer. Englander (21), Durham, England Nov 13, 2007 The aroma is rich. Smooth, with an earthy and fruity finish. Moderate carbonation. Medium body. Very pleasant. rodenbach99 (675), Longueuil, Quebec, Canada Nov 10, 2007 bouteille, un icone en son genre, grande bière sans défaut que j’adore, j’ai déjà hâte d’en boire une autre... dmac (1418), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Nov 8, 2007 12 oz botle. Pours a deep dark reddish/brown with a small frothy light beige head that quickly diminishes from the body of the beer but clings to the sides of the glass for quite some time. Doughy aroma of toasted alcohollic banana bread, yeah that about sums it up. Medium bodied with a pleasant touch of carbonation that fulls your mouth but keeps the beer easily quaffable. Flavor of nuts, dark fruits, brown bread toast that is all slightly sweet when blended togather but finishes pleasantly dry with not much after taste. A relly nice old ale that should be enjoyed by all. jcr (1136), Jasper, Indiana, USA Nov 3, 2007 Medium brown/ruby pour with average size, diminishing head. Nice sweet, fruity aroma. Molasses, banana, plum, grain. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Dry finish turns bitter. Moderate carbonation. Medium body, watery texture. Very smooth mouthfeel.High drinkability. Quake1028 (633), Tampa, Florida, USA Oct 31, 2007 12oz bottle. Ruby red/brown body with a huge, pillowy light tan head. Damn, this thing is massive. Sticky lacing remains all over the sides of the glass once the head decides to die down, which takes a good long while. Nose of black licorice, star anise, pine tar, figs, raisins and tobacco. Also some musky/earthy/dirty notes. Fore is creamy, with notes of tobacco and earth, then folding into licorice and malt. The flavor is a bit of a let down after the aroma, concentration and impact not up to par. Soft palate, low carbonation. Very creamy on the tongue. Thin-medium bodied. Finish is a bit bland, with some bitterness coming through at the very end, and lengthy. Good beer, could be great. I wonder if this bottle is a bit old since this is rumored to have stopped being imported into the US some time ago. tytoanderso (1382), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Oct 29, 2007 Bottle. Aroma of dry roasted malt and bananas. Not the hefe-like bananas. Actual freshly crushed bananas. Kinda odd. There’s also some tar and dried tobacco notes as well. Pours dark brown with dark mahogany highlights. Rich, creamy off-white head. Flavor has some roasted malt, dried fruits, bittering hops and some charred (but not smoked) wood. Body is a bit on the thin side, but big enough to hold my interest. Finishes with a dry, and semi-sweet licorice characteristic. VeloVampire (483), Parkdale, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 29, 2007 12 oz bottle - pours very dark reddish-brown, almost looks like polished mahogany in the glass, with a small, long lasting tan head. Bold aromas of dates, prunes, and faint tar. Nice mouthfeel - very soft, almost cask-like. Slightly sour upfront, and that segues into a melange of dark fruit, and finally finishes with a black licorice and subtle alcohol blend. Some yeast notes in there too. There’s lots going on here. Beautiful beer.
