Suede53 (39), Canton, Ohio, USA Apr 21, 2009 [Bottle] Pours a dark amber, almost purple with a thin head that didn’t last. Aroma is roasted and slightly fruity. Taste is similar with an interesting sweet and bitter dynamic. Fruity accents with a touch of a sour note. Finish is a little more bitter but still very flavorful. Very interesting beer and the name fits. Definetely a keeper. ZazuH (42), Brentwood, California, USA Apr 14, 2009 (12 oz btl) Oily dark brown pour w/ a foamy off-white head; fully diminishing. Dark fruit (figs) and molasses in the nose give no hint to toasted malt and earthy hop flavor. While the mouthfeel is creamy, it finishes surprisingly dry, but disappointingly watery overall. Fine example of the Old Ale style, but not a top performer for me. donteatpoop (124), Youngstown, Ohio, USA Apr 9, 2009 Dark brown ale with an underlying amber glow and a finger of tan head.
Smells and tastes of molases and sweet malts.
I could certainly drink a few of these in a session. Rynoplasty (500), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Apr 1, 2009 Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is slightly fruity roasted malt. Flavor is bready malty with a slight bitterness at the end. daniele (1642), Italy Mar 31, 2009 ambrato carico buona schiuma piuttosto persistente note dolciastre lieve fruittato vinoso piccola ossidazione frutta secca leggero caramello sentori tostati discreto amaro compass40204 (1), Louisville, Kentucky, USA does not count Mar 23, 2009 This beer was listed as an "old ale/barleywine" at an irish pub in louisville. It lacks the intense warming alcohol character I’d expect from either style. It reminds me a bit of Dixie Blackened Voodoo minus the tannic astringency. Very drinkable and becomes slightly better as it reaches room temp. The hard water flavor evident of the region is nice in a beer this dark. liinis (695), Helsinki, Finland Mar 23, 2009 Dark chocolate brown with a beige head. liquorice and chocolate. damn good, surprisingly good. delight. Rodders (114), Norwich, Norfolk, England Mar 22, 2009 (Bottle from Co-op) Pours dark with a hint of red, but no head. Aroma rich, with dark fruit and ripe plums - a hint of banana like everyone says - chocolate, butterscotch and a malt syrupyness. Taste is exactly the same, fairly sweet as the prominant flavour, mlaty with a little hop dyness. Warming alcohol and a somewhat prickly carbonation. Rich and particularly good for an English ale.
