The aroma is sweet malts with a bit of fruit, bananas I think. I also get some alcohol. The flavor is an interesting mix of swee fruits, roasted malts, with enough hop bitterness to balance everything out a bit. Not an everyday beer for me but not bad. oberabcbbsok (686), Hoboken, Belgium

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 15, 2007 i like it, always have. first had it in 1993. nice fruity taste, on top of a good hop character and nice malt base. peculiar indeed! tastes dark a bit smokey and thin but silky. a lot going on here. good to just sit and drink while you ponder something worthwhile. slightly astringent and yet foamy. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 13, 2007 From bottle-- probably a year old. I’m not familiar with many commercial styles of English old ales. It reminds me a little of an ESB or a brown ale with a slight musty bitter aftertaste. The initial aroma and taste is very clean-- you detect the bitterness and must on the aftertaste. I thought it was interesting, but not spectacular. Would like to try a fresher sampe on tap. 17thfloor (1447), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Flavor is very complex highlighted by roasted malt ... but is a little thin... vague. Very good beer though. cstuartj (305), Washington, USA

A different kind of taste that I really cant put a finger on what it tastes like. Ok but not great. dchmela (1426), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 1, 2007 Bottle. Pours a deep brownish red. Banana and carmel in the nose. Drinks very smooth. This beer needs to warm up a bit to really get some of the flavors out of it. If you can ever find this on cask, its well worth it (I’ve had it in London and Edinburgh). It is served at almost room temp in the UK and it is wonderful.
