CrazyJames (6), Middlesbrough, England does not count Aug 18, 2005 Updated: Aug 20, 2005The first beer I have rated on this. I enjoy drinking this legendary old ale. It’s similar to the north-eastern style bitters I like, in that it’s dark and heavy with a red tinge, although it’s a lot more fruity (tarty blackberrys or raisins). It has got a ’peculier’ traditional taste, reminds me of a witches potion or something like that. The aroma is probably malty and roasted, palate probably full bodied with an oily texture. Low carbonation, even for an ale. Bitter-sweet(!), really good strong beer. GarethYoung (1110), Glasgow, Scotland Aug 18, 2005 [bottle from tesco] pours a dark red/brown colour with minimal head. aroma is berry fruits with some vinous notes and a little chocolate. body is decent and has a little bitterness in the finish. Dark ruby colour, beige head, coffee and toffee flavours with some bitter chocolate, nice bittery hops and pretty nice overall. Been ages since I had it and I had forgotten how much I like it. iamjond (7), England does not count Aug 12, 2005 This was my favorite until i discovered Coniston Bluebird Bitter and Hens Tooth. dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Aug 8, 2005 A new style for me. Smells pretty much like chlorine or a swimming pool. Red-brown in color. My this is one peculiar beer. Haha. Actually its pretty nutty but not real good - one time only for me. TAR (2088), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Aug 4, 2005 Updated: Oct 29, 2007Immaculate garnet. Tall deep-ivory ring of foam. Earthy yeast nose with dabs of rum soaked fruitcake, mashed prunes, cedar wood, plaster, star anise, and bubblegum. Soft with a delicate carbonic tickle. First sip yields a plethora of firm cedar and coarse dried-leather softened by a gentle bubblegum kiss. Adeptly balanced, with a sneaky estery fruitiness embracing the mineraly dryness. Persistently firm, and cleanly attenuated, but with a flavorsome support of molasses glazed fruitcake. Vanilla and earthy figs dance amid the dry edge of roast which compounds the airiness and amplifies the fruitiness, as hints of star anise prick the palate. Tardy touch of acidity fades into a mild unsweetened chocolate push. Finishes appetizingly earthy, but full, with a mixture of rooty Fuggles and leathery yeast. Not only is the nose extremely polished, but it bristles with clean estery complexity, as well. A charming little English brew that must be addictive from the cask. haukur (682), Reykjavik, Iceland Jul 31, 2005 bottled; malty aroma, heavy body with hints of roast and nuts. Some sweetness and a balanced finish
