craigbeerlover (11), England Jul 30, 2005 Bottled from Tesco, and probably my favourite ale at the moment.
Had a very deep flavour of Citrus, oats and fruits some of which I can’t pin point.
Has a very nice bitter kick to the end of the bottle.
JohnBarleycorn (390), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 30, 2005 Porter-like appearance. Medium-strength alcohol on the nose with a dose of molasses swirling in the background. Comes out a little thin in the flavour department, with vague semblance of charcoal and molasses drifting through the palate, but overall quite watery. Quite innocent for a strong. PattyBoy (302), North Liberty, Iowa, USA Jul 26, 2005 Looks great in the glass, a deep red brown with a nice creamy head. Flavor is malty, toffee, slightly roasty & nutty. It’s sweet but in a good way. I think it has an appropriate bitterness. Very tasty and went down easy. There was just a hint of sourness that I didn’t care much for. orimo (19), tokyo, Japan Jul 26, 2005 This beer is fabulous any time and good for any dishes!
This is not too strong. Good aroma.
jmuhops (663), Winchester, Virginia, USA Jul 24, 2005 Pours deep red with a small, quickly-dissipating head. Aroma is very fruity, mostly banana, with very light floral and vanilla notes. Flavor is kind of disappointing. Not much to it, just biscuity English malts and a light hop bitterness. Vanilla in the aftertaste. I’ll stick to the Olde Suffolk. JorisPPattyn (5155), Antwerpen, Belgium Jul 15, 2005 Dark brown clear beer with a cardinal-red shine; creamy, dirty-cream coloured head leaving flimsy lace. Toffeelike, syrupy nose - candi syrup or even maple syrup, and sweets, just a tad buttery aroma. Bitterish, fresh hoppy and slightly metallic start over a caramely, and soft-roasted malt base. If there’s diacethyl, I cannot nail it. Not overwhelming, forceful or sensational, but with a very weighted balance. Pasteurised it may be, but stands its own better than a lot of microbrews without filtering. Well-bodied, far above its 5.5% ABV, velvety MF. I KNOW this might be brewed again at Masham, thanks to the MBO. I do NOT know if that knowledge influenced my appreciation - but this seems BETTER than I remember. Problem is - I used to drink T.O.P. BEFORE the big bad takeover. Go figure. beerbill (1917), Laurel, New York, USA Jul 12, 2005 Bottle. Pours a deep brown with a hint of red. Nice light tan head. Rich, malty flavor, almost chewy. A touch of sweetness makes this a very enjoyable brew. MullMan (1080), Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA Jul 10, 2005 dark clear copper/ruby chestnut color. a lot of fizz going up the center. medium head that is creamy/foamy and light tan. aroma is honeyish sweet malt, slightly grassy. mouthfeel is very light and almost watery. medium carbonation. sweet caramel/toffee maltyness. very weak bitter finish. I’ve had this 15 years ago at the Khyber Pass in Phila PA, and it had much more flavor then. now it’s a shell of it’s former self.
