kujo9 (1077), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA Apr 30, 2005 12 oz bottle, Cleveland Alefest: Dark brown, mohogany, w/ a lasting off white/cream colored head. Very buttery & yeasty at the start. Mild chocolate & roasty notes w/ a some sherry to show the age... Very little dark fruit character. Well balanced overall, but sweet up front. Diacetyl in the flavor as well, w/ some sherry. English yeast w/ some moderate roasty notes. Finish is malty and buttery throughout. Low carbonation, medium body, and well hidden 7% alcohol. Overall a very good beer, minus the diacetyl notes that are at times overwhelming. BeerBlockaid (538), Jacksonville, Florida, USA Apr 28, 2005 Bottle: Poured dark brown/cola. No head...infact flat. I think it might be a bad bottle?? either way, solid blend of flavours followed by a smooth, milky aftertaste. Nice sweet malts, Bananas, sweets (toffee, caramel). To be honest, because I think I’ve got a flat bottle, it taste and feels like cold coffee. Will have to try another bottle...damn! thehipone (197), Australia Apr 26, 2005 pours out a deep brown/black with red highlights. Sweet malty aroma with hints of dark fruit. A bit of leathery aftertaste but nothing pverpowering. Smooth, creamy mouithfeel. An enjoyable,, complex blend of lfavors. TheGrandMaster (1847), Auckland, New Zealand Apr 25, 2005 Poured from the bottle, a dark ruby brown with a beautiful full rocky head. Interesting malty aroma, so I even smell hints if apple? A fruity flavour with hints of toffee for me. In the mouth, I find a tartness that clings to the tounge. arjoseph (594), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 24, 2005 Bottle into pint glass. I’ve had this a couple times, had it again last night, and decided to rate it. Transluscent brown in the glass with a light tan head that was fluffy/fizzy and diminished fairly quickly. Aroma was of buttery malts: caramel, a bit of butterscotch, banana bread. The malts were perfect in their residual sweetness, very smooth on the palate too. Fruits were sweet and rich, but not too intense, just gliding under the surface. I couldn’t really place them, but they were something; it wasn’t just random acidity or malt. Hops provided a nice smooth dryness to the finish, which was just bitter enough to counter the sweetness of the malt. Somewhat chewy and nutty; body was medium and refreshing. UnsofistaCat (222), Garden City, Michigan, USA Apr 22, 2005 I love old ale. Simple, sweet malt, bitter at the end, lightly carbonated and smooth. Man, I have to try this cask conditioned or at least on tap. Brown color with a trace of red. Head was a little thin from the bottle. Unsophisticated but good. Love it. BoomerSooner (17), Norman, Oklahoma, USA Apr 22, 2005 Pours a deep black like coffee color. Pretty good flavor, i detect hints of bannana and such but theat may just be me. FROTHINGSLOSH (1961), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 20, 2005 Updated: Jun 24, 2006I have only had this one a couple of times over the years. Since it had been a while I decided to try it again and rate it. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma is sweet and malty. The mouthfeel is exceptionally smooth and creamy. The flavor is sweet malt with a light coffee undertone. The beer turns bitter on the finish.
