tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Feb 19, 2005 Toffee, butterscotch, caramel, plum-like fruitiness and brown sugar with a light roasted note to the aroma. Opaque black body is topped by generous tan head that stands nicely and leaves some lacing. Sugary without being overly sweet with strong dark fruit flavours and plenty of caramel and toffee and a light butterscotch tone. Very mild touch of hop flavour and bitterness in the finish. Medium body with fair carbonation that engages the tongue. Bottle (purchased in England Sep. 2004). YogiBeera (2437), Hamburg, Germany Feb 12, 2005 Nice deep red color, small layer of a off-white colored creamy head. Malt and band-aid nose. Flat mouthfeeling though it has a lot of carbonation. Celery and sage taste also slightly hoppy with a roasted finish. thevulcan (16), England Feb 8, 2005 Slighly fizzy dark brown beer with a little off-white head which disappears fast. Not a bad beer! steview (901), Los Angeles, California, USA Feb 7, 2005 english pint / interesting ale, and delicious. like a slightly fruity roasted stout without coffee, moreso toffee and syrupy sweets... cremey yet thin mouthfeel, and everything seems to be so subtle, but together it makes quite a nice package. although interesting, although delicious, i don’t know... i’d have to have more and at other times... DrBeer (777), Danderyd Stockholm, Sweden Jan 31, 2005 Dark brown with a red tone and nice beige head.
Spicy aroma with notes of chocolate and apples.
Creamy flavor with notes of chocolate, apple, metal and stable. hints of roasted malt and low bitterness. Smooth. cathcacr (586), Portland, Oregon, USA Jan 31, 2005 (Transcribing some long-lost notes from ca. late ’02.)
Pretty solid; dark amber, mild aroma, sweet, fairly mild flavor, easy on the palate. Slightly smoky hints in the flavor. Nice head and retention. Mild and pleasant, though wouldn’t feel the urge to make it a staple. Quite a bit of sweetness in this one.
’05 - And, damn, I was right on the button vs. the RB average! Cornfield (4892), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Jan 30, 2005 This is a nice old ale. Brownish-red in color with a slender off-white head, this had some nice malty, bready aromas... sweet, but not overdone. Soft in the mouth, it tastes sugary sweet (but not cloyingly so) with fruits, malts, a hint of bitterness, and some nuttiness. Has a dry, bittersweet finish. Good drink. mookie (43), Tacoland, Texas, USA Jan 30, 2005 dark deep ruby brown in color. foam deminishes to a healthy thin blanket. smells like raisin bread. gentle carbonation provides a soft mouthfeel. well integrated flavors of apple, prune, nutty malt and brown sugar. musty. somewhat juicy. bitterness is laid back yet definitive. there’s a foodiness to this fresh old world ale. finishes dry. it’s been a long time since i had one and i don’t remember it being this enjoyable. excellent.
