timsilvia32 (445), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Nov 20, 2008 Nice amber pour with a lasting cream colored head. Malt, peaty aromas. Tastes similarly with some toffee and smoke. Minimal fruits to me. Pretty dry and clean finish. A little thin, but very drinkable. Not one of those blast you in the face, good and worth trying. fidel (886), Livermore, California, USA Nov 19, 2008 Dark brown, roasted malts, nutty, caramel, dark fruits, little wood, slight coffee. 00cobraR (1096), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Nov 18, 2008 cant believe i have never drank this. Pours of a darker red color with a smaller head. aroma is nutty with a nice malt mix to it. flavor was some sweetness, some fruit with a dry bitter finish. douglas88 (1557), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Nov 17, 2008 Bottle bought at College Liquors in Grand Junction, CO. Pours a nice ruby color with a small white bubbly head. The aroma is quite nice; sweet nutty and fruity notes, some malts and light toffee also. The taste is very nice; loads of fruitiness, some sweet caramel and toffee, a large malt presence also. A very light bitterness in the finish. Quite vinous and very quaffable. An excellent mouthfeel, creamy and full. Very nice. RedXIII (127), Powell, Ohio, USA Oct 27, 2008 Updated: Oct 29, 2008Very dark brown pour with an off-white head. I do smell the bananas, along with sweet malts, oak and raisins. Flavor kind of reminds me of a nut brown ale. Nutty, creamy, malty with flavors of caramel, toffee and banana finish. Too thin on the palate but very bold flavors. durhambeer (1187), Durham, USA Oct 26, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown hazy pour with thin off-white head. Very English-tasting... the hops and malt are familiar to British beers. Fruity sweet nose of bananas, cherries, and creamy tropical notes standing out but but overwhelmed by maltiness. Port/sherry notes as well. Surprising flavors for a low-alcohol beer. I feel like I need a hearty English meal, a fire in the fireplace, and a rainy day outside to truly appreciate this beer. 502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Oct 24, 2008 12 oz. into shaker. Very very murky (not even hazy) brown color with a reddish hue around the edges. Descent light tan head with some descent lace. Aroma is very potent almost a bit overwhelming - sherry, cherries, port, oak, candi sugar, and BOOZE (I am astounded that such a low ABV smells so strongly of booze and how an old ale can even have such a low abv). The flavor is pretty similar - very serious and appealing cherry notes (similar to in a schwarzbier). However, like the aroma, the flavor could be close to a 10 if it weren’t just barely overboard - a little too much on the sweet and boozy port/sherry aroma and flavor. A bit thin and watery on the palate without much carbonation (better than over-carbonated macro pale lagers though). Overall: unique and definitely worth a try. Perhaps it should be called a ’’Traditional Ale’’ though, not an ’’Old Ale.’’ smjohnst (202), , Pennsylvania, USA Oct 21, 2008 All of the things in the description seem to be true to this beer. It had a really different kind of finish. It really is a little bit peculiar
