Its initial sweetness is, apparently, "of roasted and vinous notes with a subtle bitter aftertaste". Strong fruitiness, often with "banana notes" standing out, is derived from Old Peculier’s fermentation process.

Bottle. Pours a lavishly clear and dark reddish brown/brick hue. A creamy light tan head sits atop and clings to the glass as it descends. Aroma is subtly fruity and sweet with a sour alcohol note. Slight metallic aroma (import) like a grip of old coins. Muddy toffee notes open to the nose as the ale warms. An old earthy dustiness rounds out this beer. The flavor is bighty on the palate. Hints of vanilla and caramel dominate the middle. Finishes somewhat bitter, and mildly alcoholic, with lingering pleasant sour pear and grape nuts. Light/medium moutfeel. "Uncle B’s, A little rusty and dusty."

Pours brown, red reflexes in glass. Short beige head. Malty aroma, not very rich. Some chocolate but not much. Light bitterness, quite sweet. Some fruits in flavor but in the very far back. Light to medium body. Very average beer.

0.5 l bottle from Alko. Dark brown colour minimal head, well, this an English ale. This is not like a dry dark ale or a sweet dark ale, this is something between them. Some old motor oil taste, in a good way. Close to those Belgian dark ales, but not so sweet or spicy. Just easy, and some bitter palate.

The bottle poured dark with a small head which didn’t last long. Taste of caramel followed by bitter aftertaste.

500ml Bottle from Sainsbury’s, New Mills, Derbyshire. Pours very dark with no head of note but is surprisingly light and subtle tasting with plenty of (non-roasty) malts and indeed banana notes.

Woody, dark roast, slight touch of coffee, medium bitter, alcohol a little more evident than its ABV would suggest. Pretty good.
