2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Dark brown color with nice foam head, which seems to disappear quite quickly. This beer does not have smell, that I find quite strange. The taste is bit sweet, and aroma is bitter plus malty. Somehow I think this is quite much like a beer from ages before, and fairly likely not favored by young. Unfortunately nostalgia does not carry that far, at the end this is not really anything more than usual dark ale.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottle purchased 2009. Figure this has been breathing my cellarís summer warmth and winter chill enough. Deep brown color, but somehow clean, fizzes like a soda pop. Smell of kilned malts, a but of plum, and somehow alcoholic. Nothing off, which is always the risk. First thing that hits the tongue, though, is a very thin mouthfeel. Not that itís a weak beer, but it just seems thereís not enough flavor to go around. Still has some fizz to it, so not like itís a cask pour. Mine had plenty of dregs or yeast at the bottom, which I swirled in, and it picked up the flavor a bit. But this one just left me feeling that for its reputation, it should be better. Maybe a newer bottle will be considered at a future date.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
An old favorite. Rich dark chocolate with banana and pear. Well balanced hoppiness, but a low enough ABV to enjoy more than one. Been drinking since the late 70's.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Tesco. Pours a dark mahogany colour with a quickly dissipating tan head. No particularly strong aromas, but lots of flavour. Toffee, fruit cake, sherry notes, buterscotch and vanilla all combine for one very flavoursome ale. This has always been a favourite. and still tastes great.
