3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Reviewed 2/23/13. Thanks to Butch for the bottle! 12 oz bottle into a plastic cup.
A: Pours a dark brown color. The head is a one finger light mocha shade.
S: The first thing I notice is a nice caramel malt backbone. Afterwards, it morphs into a slightly sweeter expression of dark fruit, molasses, and chocolate. Decent depth in the aroma.
T: The opening, midtaste, and finish at first sip is mostly earthy sourness. A bit of caramel tries to pop up before the semi-sour (not tart) finish, in a (failed) attempt to give it some depth.
M: Feels light, but not overly so. Thereís a good bit of carbonation which help gives the bittersweet finish a nice backbone to it. Refreshing?! Yes. Apart from the nose, itís probably my favorite feature.
O: Enjoyable aromatics, but itís just okay otherwise. Though to be fair, this isnít my style by any stretch of the imagination.

Bottle. Weird, I could have sworn I'd rated this. Pleased I checked. Pours a very dark amber/brown colour with an off white head. Aroma is sweet dark fruit, dark toffee. Medium body, medium carbonation. Lots of figgy dark fruits, dark toffee, a little apple, hint if citrus. Mild bitterness. Nice.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottle purchased 2009. Figure this has been breathing my cellarís summer warmth and winter chill enough. Deep brown color, but somehow clean, fizzes like a soda pop. Smell of kilned malts, a but of plum, and somehow alcoholic. Nothing off, which is always the risk. First thing that hits the tongue, though, is a very thin mouthfeel. Not that itís a weak beer, but it just seems thereís not enough flavor to go around. Still has some fizz to it, so not like itís a cask pour. Mine had plenty of dregs or yeast at the bottom, which I swirled in, and it picked up the flavor a bit. But this one just left me feeling that for its reputation, it should be better. Maybe a newer bottle will be considered at a future date.

An old favorite. Rich dark chocolate with banana and pear. Well balanced hoppiness, but a low enough ABV to enjoy more than one. Been drinking since the late 70's.

Bottle from Tesco. Pours a dark mahogany colour with a quickly dissipating tan head. No particularly strong aromas, but lots of flavour. Toffee, fruit cake, sherry notes, buterscotch and vanilla all combine for one very flavoursome ale. This has always been a favourite. and still tastes great.

Decent brew. Almost a staleish brew, some dark malts, very light, heavy english ale yeast.
