COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle: Pasteurised.
Abv reduced from 5.7 to 5.6 in 2010.
Its initial sweetness is, apparently, "of roasted and vinous notes with a subtle bitter aftertaste". Strong fruitiness, often with "banana notes" standing out, is derived from Old Peculierís fermentation process.

Bottle purchased 2009. Figure this has been breathing my cellarís summer warmth and winter chill enough. Deep brown color, but somehow clean, fizzes like a soda pop. Smell of kilned malts, a but of plum, and somehow alcoholic. Nothing off, which is always the risk. First thing that hits the tongue, though, is a very thin mouthfeel. Not that itís a weak beer, but it just seems thereís not enough flavor to go around. Still has some fizz to it, so not like itís a cask pour. Mine had plenty of dregs or yeast at the bottom, which I swirled in, and it picked up the flavor a bit. But this one just left me feeling that for its reputation, it should be better. Maybe a newer bottle will be considered at a future date.

Pours a chocolate brown with small beige head that diminishes quickly. Cut grass, dried fruit aromas. Initial sweetness is rounded out nicely with a malty hit in the back - dried fig, caramel and malty-sweet.

UPDATED: JAN 18, 2015 Super darkish brown color with moderately rapid disappearing beige foam head. Very little smell. The taste is less creamy, oily and sweet than expected. Coffee and chocolate aromas and malty taste, but predominantly licorice.

Beer # 1600. Aroma: Pinot Noir, fig jam, leather, dusty caramel; overall quite wine-like, but still undoubtedly beer. Appearance: Dark, murky cola brown with a frothy tan head that settles into a healthy, bubbly skin. Flavor: Vinous up front with more caramel character as this endures; dries out pleasantly with minimal bitterness. Palate: Medium body, slick texture, very soft carbonation, lingering finish. Overall: Thought this was pretty delicious; didnít buy this with any special consideration regarding beer #1600, but this was more than worthy to me.

Nuts, bread, dried fruits, cooked vegetables, caramel, licorice, banana and a hint of coffee in the aroma. Dark brown to black with a red tint, tan head. Medium sweet and medium bitter. Medium body with a soft carbonation. Overall a pleasant drink, but perhaps a bit on the thin side.

Marstonlad (485) - Helsinki, FINLAND - DEC 14, 2014
A dark brown color with a dense little head. The aroma displays lightly roasty maltiness with some dark fruity notes - bread, nuts, some raisin appear. Taste is light to medium sweet, mostly malty but also slightly bitter in the finish. Plum and caramel combine initially with maltier notes featuring later. The palate is medium bodied, the carbonation soft. Very smooth, balanced and tasty ale that is suitable for various situations.

Rated from memory. Dark red copper with low-medium head. Aroma complex and inviting with notes of dried fruit, dark bread and herbs. Taste is full and bittersweet with a nice malt body. Notes of dried fruit, grass and spice. Really nice for the darker months.
