2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottle purchased 2009. Figure this has been breathing my cellarís summer warmth and winter chill enough. Deep brown color, but somehow clean, fizzes like a soda pop. Smell of kilned malts, a but of plum, and somehow alcoholic. Nothing off, which is always the risk. First thing that hits the tongue, though, is a very thin mouthfeel. Not that itís a weak beer, but it just seems thereís not enough flavor to go around. Still has some fizz to it, so not like itís a cask pour. Mine had plenty of dregs or yeast at the bottom, which I swirled in, and it picked up the flavor a bit. But this one just left me feeling that for its reputation, it should be better. Maybe a newer bottle will be considered at a future date.

500ml bottle from corner shop. Mid-brown to dark brown, somewhat translucent. Light aroma of liquorice and some chocolate malt. Sweet at first, deftly turning bitter until the end. Bitter coffee notes in the aftertaste. Good enough but not a patch on the cask version.

Rated from old notes. Pours frothy and creamy into the glass. Lightly carbonated. Distinctive sweet caramel taste with a hint of nuts. Well balanced. A good, hearty English ale.

500ml bottle. First "Old Ale" for me. Clear and very dark brown colour, frothy tan head. Dark fruity, malty aroma and flavour, caramel, some sweetness too, very lightly roasted. Quite a smooth finish. Very nice beer.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Very dark amber in colour. Tastes nice and malty, but light and drinkable, had with a roast chicken but would go better with grilled meat like steak or burgers.

I had this several years ago, but still remember it as easily a Top 5 of All-time. Just wish I could find it again as itís been MIA(Missing-in-Action) in the Mid-Atlantic region(USA). Will keep it #5 on my list until I can try it again to compare to the other (4) on my list;)

500ml bottle from my local Asda. Pours deep ruby brown with good frothy tan head. Aroma is toffee fudge. Taste is smooth toffee and cocoa, fruitiness comes on the finish with faint banana. Tangy bittersweet finish. Good classic Old Ale.
