eager25 (6), Independence, Iowa, USA does not count Aug 20, 2009 Strong coffee aroma with a short lived head. Good flavor with a lingering finish. Not as smooth as I like, but it’ll do if you need a dark beer fix drowland (1360), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 18, 2009 Had on tap at the brewpub with my fiancee but unfortunately was eating dinner and didn’t take good notes. All I noted for this one was "Flawed." Dogbrick (2816), Columbus, Ohio, USA Aug 15, 2009 Sample at the brewpub. The beer pours black with a medium beige head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Roasted coffee aroma with notes of malt. Medium, creamy body with flavors of roasted malt and coffee along with some sweet chocolate. The finish is short and roasty with a bit of coffee left behind. Decent overall. pepsican (884), The Student Ghetto, Iowa, USA Jan 6, 2008 Black with a thin tan head. Flavors of oats, coffee, caramel, maple syrup, and smoke. Slightly bitter, decent hop kick. Good. SledgeJr (2957), Omaha, Nebraska, USA May 15, 2007 On tap at the brewpub. This is not retired. Simply the brewpub changed its name to Third Base Bar & Brewery. Same brewer, same beer, same recipe. They claim that they brew this beer with 50 pounds of oatmeal in every batch. If that is true, they must be brewing a million gallon batch. I get no oatmeal smoothness or thickness of palate. It is dark brow/black like a stout, but the head is thin and whispy. Far too watery for the style, this merely musters up a burnt flavor to the taste. eve (240), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Sep 5, 2006 Tried this at the Festival of Iowa Beers, although I thought they said it was an oatmeal stout, maybe an oatmeal version? Deep black, rich milky coffee aroma, thick malty flavor with coffee and chocolate, satisfying but light. GeneralGao (3051), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Jul 12, 2006 Draught at the brewpub. dark, dark brown, almost opaque. Thin tan head with whispy lace. Nose was chocolatey with a roasty undertone. Pleasantly sweet on the tongue with chocolate and mocha flavors punctuated by a touch of brown sugar at the end. Pretty good. Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA May 31, 2005 On tap at the brewpub: Decent roasty, smoky flavors, but far too thin and watery and still that pesky sweet finish that hinders almost every beer here.
