3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draught and bottle. Pours deep golden with nice white head. Great balance and generous hop additions make this one of the best APA’s around. Refreshing.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Very nice and refreshing. Pours golden and slightly cloudy, with thin head that diminishes quickly. Pleasant, light bodied brew with more flavor complexity than expected. Will buy more again.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle: pours a slightly hazy dark straw yellow with a fluffy white head. Aromas are bread and citrus with some nice earthy herbal notes as well. Taste is crisp and refreshing while still maintaining a bit of complexity to it. Earthy and bready with a crisp citrus bite that is tucked away in there. Very good beer, and a nice example of not over hopping a beer.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, bottled on 4/11/2014. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy golden straw color with a 1-2 finger dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon zest, orange peel, cracker, bread, herbal, floral, grass, light pine, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon zest, orange peel, cracker, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, light pine, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of earthy pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon zest, orange peel, cracker, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, light pine, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and robustness of pale malt and earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and fairly sticky/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with no warming present after the finish as expected of 4.8%. Overall this is a very nice blonde ale style. All around good balance and robustness of pale malt and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Hazy Yellow, thin head, mild carbonation and decent lacing. Aroma of pale malts, floral hops, barley and some earthiness. Flavor is pretty much the same and with a dry but grassy aftertaste. Light body and carbonation, very easy to drink. Decent beer overall.

(Midwest backlog 08/2013, Milwaukee to Traverse City, MI roadtripping 6-pack). Even more modest, but by design, than their Midwestern PA, this lean and refreshing PA is the nearest the Midwest came to offering us an indigenous sessioning brew for the road, like in parts of Franconia. Goes down easy like a premium lager, on crisp biscuit malts, some peach ice tea and a citric bite, whiff of herbal hops and a quick but clean finish. There is a mineral note, which did not disturb me and complemented the lacking saltiness of Lake Michigan, also quenching our thirsts until days after foolishly climbing Sleeping Bear. I realise this is getting less than stellar feedback here given Bells’ standing and this minimalist recipe, but staying true to my initial glee of having a 6-pack of this to come back to on and off the warm UP road, plus counting extra bonus points for the Traverse Bay map label design, appealing to any beer tourist passing through, this amounts to personally memorable. Plus I’d love an easy, affordabld late summer sessioner like this at hand this side of the Great Lakes (and the Atlantic).
