4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 ounce bottle purchased 13 months ago at Bine & Vine ($3.49). "Packaged 09/05/2014". Pours a reddish muddy brown hue with one finger of yellow-tan foam. AROMA of dried figs, raisins, candied dark fruit, holiday fruitcake, port wine, and brown sugar. Great FLAVOR of rich toffee, dark fruit (raisins, semi-sweet cherry), cinnamon and other holiday spice, a bit of chocolate, and almost a roasty-bitterness with some lightly burnt molasses. Moderately sweet but still far from cloying. The big ABV is pretty well concealed here. San Diego / Escondido really doesnít get that cold, but this is a nice beer for a cooler day with an early dusk. (1540, 989)

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Pours a murky brown beer with a thin off white head on top. Aroma has massive barley, some chocolate and slightly red fruits. The malts are dominating the nose in a sweet and sugary way. No booze detected. Flavor is sweet and malty again, bigger hints of dark chocolate and also a slight bitter aftertaste. The booze comes out in the very back of the palate, giving it some nice kickback. Very warming, great balance and soft carbonation. Great stuff.

4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
A juggernaut of goodness, Third Coast is a mouthfilling malt bomb that, despite its high alcohol content, remains very drinkable. Big caramel, cocoa, and dark fruit intermingle with piney hop notes that play in the aroma and flavor, but donít add much bitterness, serving merely to keep the sweet malts from completely stealing the show. Thick bodied, but never cloying, this is a Barley Wine done the right way, showcasing the grain elegantly. Ends cleanly with a slow malty fade, leaving wads of viscous tan head behind.
