4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Sometimes, I wonder why it is that I like Bells so much. Oh—I recall—Hopslam. And this. And it’s an interesting parallel: while the Hopslam sports an enviable hop profile, this one stands out on account of its spectacular malt bill. The aroma is dark, sumptuous, and sexy, with dried fruits (figs, raisins, prunes) fighting with overripe ones (cherries, plums) for attention, all on a background of wood, vanilla, brown sugar, molasses, and toffee. The taste is strong, with a a woody, boozy bitter and sweet, fruity undertones. Bitter malts and piney hops linger in the aftertaste. The alcohol is very much perceivable, but it isn’t intrusive. The mouthfeel is absolutely fantastic: viscous, creamy, fulfilling. Easily one of my favorite beers.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle poured into a snifter. From notes. Don’t remember the batch number, but it is a newer batch. Dark fermented fruits, caramel and toffee, slight hop bitterness. Still on the hot side. Good, but needs some age on it.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
aroma: hot caramel, mission figs, and maraschino cherries are balanced by floral hops. appearance: dark, ruby-brown. off-white head. amazing lacing: foam makes a delicate arch on the glass and breaks down into a uniform line of alcohol beads. taste; this is where it’s a little upsetting. almost too sweet, with the caramel giving way easily to the sweet fig taste. but ends with a harsh bitterness that stays and stays. palate: sticky with average carbonation. bitter finish.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle: deep, muddy copper & brown-ish; solid, opaque body with a small, creamy, tan film that has very good retention. Aroma is full of booze-soaked raisins, brunt brown sugar, rum, bitter black cherries, and some finishing floral & hoppy notes, a little obscure and lost in the malty mix. Taste includes a warming alcohol presence that’s tamed by sweet raisins, plums, dark figs, caramelized & almost burnt sugar. Hops are more vibrant on the palate, nearly citric at times with a tight, bitter bite on the very back end. Thick, syrupy body, chewy mouth feel. Totally delicious beer, and one of the best barleywines you can still get in a six pack.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
2009 batch. Dark brown pour with some sediment. Aromas of toffee, caramel, roasted malts, and coffee. Big roasted flavor with coffee notes and lots of dark fruit. It almost tastes like a cross between a stout and a barleywine. Very complex. Slightly dry finish at first but sweetens as it warms. Little warmth from the abv comes through in the finish as well. Great beer!
