2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Really old bottle to snifter. pours a murky brown with red tint and a small off white head that is mostly medium to large bubbles. aroma is sugar and a light bit of oxidation. some grape notes and fruit roll ups. taste is very chewy malt, but kind of flat in terms of complexity. just a sweet sugary mess at this point. likely my fault for drinking it 6 years after bottling.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
i thought it was a prototype old ale, which made for a very good beer that fell just a little short of the "wow" factor. rich aroma, body, and flavor. caramel, lactic qualities, rum, raisins...maybe a touch of hops in the finish, but not bitter at all. pretty stinkin smooth. not a top 100 beer for me, and Expedition is far and away my favorite Bells beer, but this adds yet another tasty brew to their line-up. I’m starting to doubt that they make anything average."

Poured from bottle into a snifter
Appearance – Pours a deep mahogany color with some ruby highlights shining through when held up to the light. Upon pouring there is a small tan colored head. The head fades rather fast leaving only a trace of lace on the sides of the glass. While there is little lacing a thickness can be seen when swirling in the glass as the brew clings to the side leaving a fast dissipating foam on the glass once the liquid recedes.
Smell – The aroma is malty and fruity with a big malty bread smell mixed with lots of darker fruits. The darker fruits are mainly of a plum, prune, raisin and fig aroma bringing a rather sweeter smell to the brew. While the fruit brings a sweetness some hop of an earthy and herbal nature along with a boozy rum smell help balance the aroma creating a warming smell overall.
Taste – The taste begins with a smoother bready and slightly fruit flavors taste. The fruit is of the darker fruits that were detected in the nose. While the nose was rather heavy overall in the sweeter fruit, the taste was not but instead was heavier on the bready tastes upfront. As the taste advances the breadiness remains the same in intensity, but the fruity flavors dwindle some. As this occurs some spice flavors of nutmeg and clove come to the tongue along with some earthy bitter hop and a moderately strong rum flavor. The rum and hop get stronger more toward the end and when combined with the now lighter fruit and bready flavor create a moderately bitter and rummy taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is super thick and creamy with a carbonation level that is on quite low. Both work in concert to create a mouth coating feel bringing all the drier, slightly earthy, malty and boozier flavor to linger on the tongue creating a very warming feel.
Overall – A barley that is a bit on the drier and more bitter side with a big warming and slow drinking style. This one is nice to sit down with for a long haul.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Poured from a 2014 bottle into a pint glass darkest of amber with a beige head.
Aroma is burnt caramel some booze.
Flavor is straight up fresh hop sweet caramel.
Prefer this brew with age. Have had 3 years back & its more subtle in the hops department and smooth as freshly mowed grass. Looking to lay this baby down. Still quite exceptional in its newness.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours as a dark brown beer with minimal head. The aroma is of strong chocolate and some caramel. As I sip, I also notice the barley and hops; the latter are quite herbal. The taste is mildly sweet. The palate is perfectly smooth. A great, complex beer that I want to try more of!

4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2009 vintage at Akkurat. Poura deep caramel with reddish hues and a minimal white head. Swirling it in the glass leaves some nice oily lacings. Nose is incredible:a deep caramel and raisin upfront with some toffee, figs and dates mixed in. Behind those some apple, prunes and slight musky tones that vye for attention. Mouthfeel is increedible as well: smooth as hell with almost no carbonation. Taste is caramel sweet with figs, dates, honey, raisins, plum and roasted nuts. Towards the end deeper musky earthy notes come forward along with the caramel, apple and raisin notes. Just fantastic!

Sweet, malty. Raisins, especially on the finish. Alcohol is quite apparent. Some yeast perhaps?

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy brown with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong oak, vanilla, and candy sugar. Medium mouthfeel with sweet vanilla, light roast, oak, wood, and light boozy finish, very good.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Sweet fruity, caramels and toffees, hints of cocoa, very much an English BW or Old Ale. Delicious and hella drinkable.
