4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz bottle, Bridge Street Kroger in Dublin, $15.99/6. Pours a darker brown, with creamy one-finger white head that dissipates into nothing; medium lacing. Aroma is indescribably just "old"--like an old wooden library full of dusty leather-bound books; dirt, tobacco, malt, some dark vinous fruit (maybe raisin). Flavor is similarly "old"; tobacco, dark malt, some bitterness in the finish offsets the sweet dark malt. Palate is fantastic; dark and full bodied, oily, yet not overly sticky. Not particularly sweet as barley wines go, which is fine. The other 5 bottles are already on the shelf and I may pick up another sixer for a longer-term aging venture. Very nice.

I have had a few barley wines before and have not liked any. I got nervous after I bought a six pack of this and saw that it is considered a barley wine and not an old ale like Curmudgeon.
I get a raisin type smell from it. Pours a light cola color with no head. I am getting flavors of fruit like raisins and dates. It has a dry finish too. There is another taste that I honestly cannot pick out. Part of it reminds me a bit of pine needles - but not like some types of hops. I do enjoy this beer.
I now have to look to see if barley wine and old ale are closely related, what the differences are...and is it that I like barley wine, but only the top tier ones.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours dark amber, with tan head. Looks pretty thick. Aroma is heavy caramel malts, smells sweet. Big heavy malty body. Lots of caramel and a little bit of fruity sweetness. Has a bit of piney hop bitterness also. Really good sipper.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours dark amber with a thin tan head. Complex aroma but taste is a bit too syrupy sweet for my taste.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JAN 10, 2015 Golden caramel pour. Aroma is honey, hops, caramel chews. Taste goes with aroma but with more hop bitterness coming through. Also some resin and mild pine cutting through. Some stewed fruits on the finish. Not overly complex but certainly tasty. Nice sticky sweet finish. A very approachable American style barleywine - could do with more x factor but just solid stuff.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
4 Jan 2015, bottle. dark amber/light brown. nose is strong, pungent bread dough, moderate alcohol, raisins, some nuts, yeast, slight rancid fruit. full body and moderately fizzy. Faint nail polish alcohol up front and more just before the finish, nutty, wheat bread, alcohol, raisins. taste in my mouth after a while is meaty and charred wood, almost like eating burnt tips. this is a good (but not hoppy) barley wine.

12oz bottle pours a dark brown color without any head. Huge malty aroma and flavor. Like a home brew kit extract.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Extra from Harrison_gord, thanks Gordon! Pours a clear mahogany with a thin white head that quickly fades and doesn’t leave much lacing. Nose is of caramel, toffee and raisins. Taste is of fruity caramel, brown sugar, alcohol. Not really hot or fusel-y alcohol, just slightly boozy. Maple syrup. Body is medium-full, carbonation medium and mouthfeel slightly syrupy but surely sticky. Overall a good barleywine but not really that distinctive, needs to be a little richer or something like that.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at home, thanks to GT2 for the trade, 28/12/14.
Extremely dark mahogany brown meets light black with a well appointed khaki covering that stays for the show.
Nose is toffee, dark fruit rinds, tobacco, earthy, light spice, dates, cake mix.
Taste comprises much the same, fruit cake, dates, raisens, prunes, caramelised brown sugars, almonds, woody licks.
Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with lightly warming alcohol.
Decent barley wine, well balanced, some well tempered bitterness so it doesn’t get too sweet .

Bottle. This is a big bitter viscous BW with lots of malt sweetness and good full flavor.
