Tap. Pours deep brown with a medium tan head and nice lacing. Strong aroma of caramel, toffee, rye bread, notes of pine. Flavor is medium sweet caramel, toffee, prune, molasses with a medium bitter finish. Warming alcohol far finish. Rich and creamy in the mouth. Very nice enjoyable beer.

Unclear Ruby reddish brown. Medium creamy beige head, lasting soapy topping. Inviting, almost dessert-like, aroma. Sweet, lightly fruity, rich caramel - I want to bite into it. Full body but smooth and soft, some booze, lasting hop finish balanced out by rich maltiness. Most drinkable barley wine Ive had to date.

Great color.. great fruit taste. I have to say.. The back of the bottle told me to cellar and test my patients.. not going to happen. Long taste, apricotes and something else i can’t put my finger on. I will be coming back for this one.

Batch 9958. I’ve been sitting on this for a while. Pours amber to garnet with a quickly settling head. It’s pretty still in the glass, just a few bubbles here and there, and plenty of floating sediment. Nose is sweet fruit, like plums, apricots, cherries. Still traces of piney, earthy, and herbal notes. Taste is mostly sweet with some bitterness still present. Palate is smooth, rich but not heavy, some stickiness, and a nice finish with plenty of bitterness. When fresh, I remember this stuff to be pretty aggressive, but it has aged nicely and has rounded out well. Very good barley wine.

S: Molasses, toasted caramel, slight hops. Very welcoming, complex and intense
A: Deep dark ruby brown. Slight light brown head, great lacing
T: Malt bomb! Compatible to Curmudgeon but more aggressive. Has a lot of sweetness from the molasses and Carmel, but there is a wonderful addition of hop notes
P: yes
O: Great beer - awesome compromise to the hop monsters

Wow! Another winner from Bells. Almond to copper brown color with a low, thick head. The aroma was mellow but I could definitely smell some hops, toffee, and fruit. The flavor, well, it was delicious. Sweet malt and hops with hints of roasted almonds and very mild chocolates. The finish is dry and slightly bitter. One of the most well balanced barley wine’s I have had.

Bottle; Aroma hits you as you open the cap; nose of caramel, cherries, and nuts, like an ice cream sundae; Cherry-brown with a tiny beige head; flavor is sweet, caramel, and fruitiness, like a bing cherry; Finish has mild hop bitterness and alcohol.

February 2005 bottle. Deep ruby/brown color with light head. Rich dark fruit and hop aroma that is very inviting. Taste is smooth, sweet, sugary. Hoppiness is very pleasant. Mouthfeel and finish very nice. This definately lives up to its reputation, but it seems like it would be alot better after another year or so. I have six from November 2005 that I plan to tuck away for safe keeping!

Batch 7800, bottled on 1-31-07. Tasted 11-22-07
Poured into a snifter. Pours mahogony with a small fizzy off-white head that diminishes quickly leaving fair lacing. The aroma is of bread and caramel malts with some nuttyness and brown sugar little to no hop aroma. Taking a drink, the first thing I taste is the caramel and nutty malts with a little alcohol burn. Very bitter, the finish is all bitterness that sticks with you for a while. No hop flavor. The body is full with a creamy texture and soft to lively carbonation. Overall I am very impressed, next up is a 2006 bottle to see how it held up.
Batch 7236, bottled 2-8-06, tasted on 11-22-07.
12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours mahogony with a small off-white fizzy head that fades away rather quickly leaving fair lacing. The aroma is of moderate caramel malts, no hop aroma. Rather one dementional. Taking a drink, at first you get a very sweet caramel malt along with a little brown sugar, no hop flavor. In the finish there is a slight bitterness, along with a very faint metallic finish. The body is full with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, it changed quite a bit with a year in the celler. No alcohol taste, the bitterness mellowed out alot along with the malt complexety. It was still good, but not as complex.
