Rated 4/1/13. 12 oz bottle poured into a tulip. A: Pours a clear amber color. The head is a two finger white shade. Given its roots, Iím actually kind of impressed by both the retention and the lingering lacing. S: Only thing notable here is some caramel malt augmenting the adjunct character. Meh. T: Just like the nose indicated, all thatís here is caramel sweetness and corn. Itís utterly simple and not entirely appealing - however, itís reasonably balanced and refreshing. M: Good crispness, but it feels too heavy on the palate. Easy enough to drink, I guess. O: Well, itís better than regular Coors/Coors Light...

12 oz bottle The ale poured a clear amber with a small head that did not stay long. The ale had the aroma of malts. The ale had a sweetness and lack of hops. The medium body ale had average carbonation. Not bad for a big brewer. Why are they afraid of adding more hops.

Hop Devil Grill, NY tap ($7): Pours amber. Smells caramel malts. Taste is inoffensive. Slightly sweet. I didnít realize that this was macro when I ordered it, but I am not in the least bit surprised.

From a 12 fl oz / 355mL bottle into a tasting glass. Aroma: Sweet malt. Not hoppy at all. Appearance: Pale, light amber. Dark urine. Taste: Sweet, bready, and malty. No depth, no complexity, no challenge. Palate: Light, thin, and short-lived. Overall: Just another mass-produced lager. Itís marketed as something new and special, but it doesnít have anything that stands out to me.

Wow, Coors fooled me here for sure. Pours somewhat clear but a bit hazy amber with a smaller gray head. Aroma and flavor are sweet, clean malts with a balanced crispness that go great with pizza.

This tastes like their Batch 19 crap just with a different label and i also thought it said brewed in Texas? Anyway, i didnt have great expectations. Amber in color with a light head. Taste is birchy with a little bit of skunk.

Appearance: Pours light caramel color.
Aroma: Light caramel and some bready malt.
Taste: Faint hop, caramel, slightly stale.
Palate:Light body.

Summary: Always obvious to see something marketed as craft that isnít...because the real craft companies donít do tv or magazine ads.

Sometimes a hybrid between two things can be better than either. Sometimes it can be worse, but have itís own use case or special character that makes it itís own thing that one might be desire, or even just be a compromise between two things that lets you get some of what you want at a cheaper price. Iím afraid that Third Shift does none of those things. It attempts to compromise between a macro and craft beer, and I canít help but think Iíd rather be drinking either a macro or a craft beer. It doesnít offer the flavor of craft or the smooth refreshment of some adjunct lagers. There is just this sickenly sweet Shiner Bock like taste combined with a mild tasting lager. Fortunately, itís not enough like Shiner Bock to outright taste like vomit. But if youíre tight on cash, buy an adjunct lager, youíll like enough it as much or more and save a little money in the process. If youíre not tight on cash, get yourself a nice IPA or the craft style of your choice. Either way, Iíd say leave this on the shelf. It doesnít outright taste bad, but it tastes worse than a lot of cheaper beers and certainly no where near as good as a lot of craft beers. MillerCoors should consider trying this concept again, but instead of vomit flavored malt, add a few extra hops to their lagers or something. An extra hoppy version of an adjunct lager at a cheaper price point than craft might work. This doesnít work, not even on the third shift. ;)
