COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Imported English floor-malted barley is the cornerstone of this traditional ale. Named Barleywine due to its’ extremely high alcohol content, this ale was created to celebrate special occasions and seasonal holidays- particularly of the cold weather variety.

2009 reserve on cask in brandy sifter at pub: sparkling clarity in ruddy brown pour, mild carbonation. Brassy caramel malt and fusel alcohol aroma. Floury nose with complex caramel malt flavors blunted by harsh alcohol in a too-thin medium body, some oily hold on rim but not ’legs’.

Little bit more bitter than I like in barleywines, but still solid overall.

2014 on cask. Garnet with fine low off-white head. Stupendous peach, dried apple, gummy bear, and cigar box nose. Intense fig and fruitcake flavor goodness is tailed by gentler pine and ginger notes. Finish is of a drawn out cola experience, with the low carbonation deceptively prominent. What a gem.

On tap @ Third St Aleworks. This is the 2009 Version. Not sure why this needed to be aged 4 years, but okay. Sort of rust, copper colored pour with a small off-white head. Aroma is intensely sweet. Oxidized sherry notes, port, and chocolate. Tons of sugar, caramel, and dates. A bit of booze as well. Flavor is really, really sweet. Lots of sugar and caramel. Dates, slight sherry, some vinous fruits, and maybe a touch of chocolate. Not terrible, just not great either.

From tap at Toronado, Barley Wine Fest 2010. Pours murky brown with a small tan head. Aroma is yeasty and caramelish. Light fruity. Sweet and dense caramelish with a light hops fruity note. Bitter, caramelish and dry finish.

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2007 Thick and rich in appearance, texture, and flavour. It has a deep, slightly reddish brown colour and it is somewhat cloudy, giving it a different and memorable appearance if not exactly ideal. it has a nicely laced, long lasting, frothy head that is indicative of the thick & frothy, but not fizzy, texture. The flavour has a definite sweetness to it, but this wonderfully offsets the strong, rich, full bodied flavours and the hoppy bitterness. Heavy duty, but also very drinkable and memorable.
