COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The rich darkness is not excessive as is sometimes seen in other craft iterations. A medium high hop flavor and aroma befits this style. The caramel and roasted malt flavors and aromas are enhanced with a well-controlled fruitiness.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle thanks to khoffman. Pours a darker brown, nearing black, with a greyish head of foam. Good lacing. Aroma is chocolate, cinnamon, and roasty malt. Taste is a little burnt and gravely with a bitter finish.

Bottle from khoffman43 pours deep amber capped by a cream colored head with great staying power, leaves a thick coating of lacing. Nose of roast and chocolate. Taste begins with a sweet twing, chocolate and roast. Midway the bitterness comes with some citrus. Bitterness is a tad subdued and makes for an easy drinker.

Bottle from Sharrett’s Liquor Store (St. Paul, Minnesota)
Aroma: Toast, pine, grass, and maybe a little citrus.
Appearance: Dark brown with a small off-white head.
Taste: Medium in bitterness, and a very slight tartness in the finish.
Palate: Medium bodied, thin, and an average carbonation.

12oz bottle from KHoffman43, Thanks Kyle. Nose is slightly hoppy but not the dank hop like from Indeed Midnight Ryder, taste is more porter than IPA, and this is like a heavily hopped porter more than a IPA, I think porter is appropriate here.

Pitch black pour with a tan head faintly reminicient of a Guiness, but lighter, crisper. Drinkable enough, tho the finish is off.

12 oz bottle from khoffman43. It pours dark brown with a khaki head. The aroma is pleasant enough with toast, cocoa powder, and some earthy, piney hops. Hop character is a bit subdued for a black ipa. The flavor has more with a good balance of piney hops and chocolate and roasted maltiness. Pretty dry finish. Nice beer. More like a hopped up porter, which isn’t a bad thing.

Dark brown pour with thin light tan head. Aroma is dominated by roast malt and some sweet caramel. Taste is also quite malt heavy, more sweet than roasty. Not enough IPA characteristics in this brew for me.

Lukaduke (1066) - Portland, Maine, USA - DEC 1, 2012
Pours a burnt umber black color with a finger of micha foam. Aromas are chocolate, burnt wheat, lil citrus and roasted dirt. Taste is overly carbonated with roasted malts driving the muddled chocolate and burnt caramel flavors. Hops are subtle with a touch of bitter tange peaking out in the finish.

Ericular (256) - Minnesota, USA - NOV 22, 2012
Pours dark brown with a big tan head and decent lacing, with some sediment suspended in the darkness. Aroma is not too strong, sweeter caramel aroma. Taste is roasted malts with porter qualities, but I was missing the IPA side of it. Felt a little thin, with not enough hops to bring substance to this style of beer.

Elwood (2552) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - NOV 13, 2012
Serving: 12 oz. bottle. It pours pitch black with a huge tan head. The nose is powerful! Lots of roasty fruitiness with a bit of citrus and earth. The flavor has a bit of flint, burnt malt, dark chocolate, slight citrus and herbal hop notes. Medium to full body with a good dose of carbonation. It leans more towards the earth stout side than the black IPA side, but it’s still a solid brew.
