The rich darkness is not excessive as is sometimes seen in other craft iterations. A medium high hop flavor and aroma befits this style. The caramel and roasted malt flavors and aromas are enhanced with a well-controlled fruitiness.

Aroma is citrus American hops, roasted malt, chocolate. Flavor is a battle between hop bitterness and roasted malts, the flavors of which seem to clash. The finish is a bit harsh as well as the roast and hops continue to fight it out. An interesting beer, but one was enough.

Tap at Minnesota State Fair, Land of 10,000 Beers section. Light chocolate, some anise, minimal aroma hopping. Dark translucent brown. Big roastiness, a touch of licorice. decent chocolate. Medium body. Not bad. Could use a bit more hopping perhaps.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown color with a decent, tan head. Roasted malt aroma with a nice, strong, hoppy finish. Smokey taste with a hop presence. Amazing balance between the two. Really nice brew.

Draft. A PRetty hop-forward black ipa, the malt body is overshadowed by citrus hops.

PotjeBier (1688) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - JUL 31, 2014
12 oz bottle from De Bierkoning, very reasonably priced. No indication what the age is. Clear, very dark brown color. Rocky off white to light beige head. Aroma’s: Roast, toasted, bit ground coffee. Same thing retronasal, with some light sweetness and fruit added. Flavor is moderate sweet, strong roasted, moderate bitter. Medium bodied. Finishes dry, heavily roasted, almost ashy, moderate bitter. Nice, ehm, porter.

Bottle. Very dark brown pour with almost no head. Dark roasty malts with some caramel in the aroma, a touch of hops shining through. More hops in the flavour, but not a lot for a black IPA. Lightly burnt, roasty malt flavour with a touch of caramel and fairly bitter at the end. Medium bodied. Decent flavour, but a little imbalanced and not incredible.

Opaque black pour with a tall tan head. Roast malt aroma. Sweet and nutty. Lightly sweet flavor, nutty roast malts that were mirrored from the aroma. Not much hop aroma or flavor makes this black IPA lean towards the stout side.

This brew was delivered by Reid D - nice smooth dark hoppy traditional IPA - went well with the barbecue and Spurs victory vs Cryami heat ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle. Pours black, slight tan head. Coffee, chocolate aroma, taste is roasted coffee and chocolate. Bit of bitter at the back. There’s not much IPA about this, but it’s a tasty porter.

Coffee and raisn nose, not strong. Mahogany, thick tan head, good lacing. Medium body. Smoky charred oak, raisin accent, parsley, grass. Very slightly vegetal in a not so good way. Solid, but like so many IDAs, it comes across more like an hoppy porter.

12 oz. bottle, consumed on 1-30-14. Pleasant aroma features cookie, brownie, light black licorice, cumin, and char scents. Pours a very dark brown with a small amount of beige head. Ordinary appearance. In the flavor, hops are noticeable but overpowered by the roasted malts. Roasted coffee and vanilla flavors. A bit fruit-juicy in the finish; grape popsicle. Light to medium body. Fizzy, frothy, and a bit lively in the palate. Simple and forgettable overall.
