Sugar Shack Maple Stout is a truly unique brew enhanced with maple syrup harvested at the Saint Johnís Abbey Arboretum and Forest. These discerning monks have given us exclusive rights (yep, that means just us) to pair their notorious sweet blend with our perfectly crafted beer. This full bodied stout has subtle but distinct hints of roasted and specialty malts. Its dark appearance is a testament to its robust nature but it is delicately balanced with sweet and hoppy notes to produce a smooth, slightly creamy stout with an insatiable pleasant maple syrup flavor. Welcome to the Sugar Shack.

Pours black with a beige head. You can smell the maple, pleasant. Smooth mouthfeel with a little zip as you go to swallow. Slight bitterness to the finish which offsets the sweetness in a balanced way. OK for the style. Would drink again.

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured black with a nice brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel and maple. Taste is quite sweet (maybe a bit too much), maple, roasted malts and some coffee notes. Interesting but perhaps a bit on sweeter side for my taste.

12oz bottle to tulip. Pours black, small brown head. Aroma of toffee, cocoa, caramel, candi, dark dried fruit. Taste of same with a little cardboard. Finish is semi-dry and good bitter. Mouthfeel is light, mod carb. Not sure where the maple is.

Bottle. Nose is pronounced butterscotch - some diacetyl aroma - beneath there is soy sauce. Flavor is exotic - a kind of toffee coconut. There is also some barley malt flavor in there somewhere. Finish is vanilla with a bit of alcohol. This is exciting for a Minnesota winter (seasonal), a bit like if this part of the world had a baltic porter - a strong somewhat nasty beer (in a good way), that makes sense for this particular place and time/weather (tiempo en el castellano y otros idiomas).

Bottle. Maple in the aroma and taste, but taste is a bit thin. However, this isnít overpowering like some, thankfully.

Bottle shared by Dan. Nose is musty, ashy and vegetal. Very offputting. Black with brown highlights. Tastes moderately better with a dried cocoa powder flavor and mouthfeel. Interesting.

Jet black with a dark khaki head. burnt smells with some maple sweetness also. Different, but not as sweet as I was hoping being a "maple stout". Worth a try.

Pours black, with a tan head. Smells of roasted coffee and chocolate grass. First taste is light sweet and light bitter, this evolves into a steady sweet finish. Has a frothy mouth feel, mild carbonation. Always worth checking out the seasonals!

Tap at new bohemia. Black with tan head. Good lacing. Roasted aroma but with hops. Soft and slightly oily. Roasted malt and heavy sugar sweetness. Not a great stout, but more my style.

Poured from a bottle. Black with airy khaki head that doesnít last. Aroma has a nice roasty character, but itís very weak. The taste is also weak, most notably the maple. If it wasnít on the bottle, I wouldnít have guessed it had maple syrup at all. There was also a hint of an off flavor. Not so bad that it ruined the beer, but enough to be unpleasant. The bitter roasted notes were okay, though. the palate was my least favorite part of the beer: thin and heavily carbonated, which isnít what I want from this style.

Dark brown / black, with a 3/4 inch tan head that dissipates quickly, leaving a sticky lacing. Roasted malts with a hint of pine in aroma. Roasted malt initial taste, a bit sweet. This transitions maple bitterness in the finish. Light carbonation. A nice creamy and thick mouth feel. Pretty good overall. Third House brews this with a deft touch. The complex flavors of the malt and maple are in a nice balance. In other words, the maple does not dominate. The sweetness is there, but also controlled to not be overbearing. The finish is just a little bitter and dry.
