Sugar Shack Maple Stout is a truly unique brew enhanced with maple syrup harvested at the Saint Johnís Abbey Arboretum and Forest. These discerning monks have given us exclusive rights (yep, that means just us) to pair their notorious sweet blend with our perfectly crafted beer. This full bodied stout has subtle but distinct hints of roasted and specialty malts. Its dark appearance is a testament to its robust nature but it is delicately balanced with sweet and hoppy notes to produce a smooth, slightly creamy stout with an insatiable pleasant maple syrup flavor. Welcome to the Sugar Shack.

Pours a darker brown with a rather small head. Maple syrup dominates the aroma, along with coffee and a burnt, almost smoky aroma. Flavor is primarily the maple part of the syrup, coupled with some burnt toast, coffee, and chocolate. Fairly bitter finish. Rather light mouthfeel--could use some thickening up or something (not very stoutlike, really).

Pours black with a beige head. You can smell the maple, pleasant. Smooth mouthfeel with a little zip as you go to swallow. Slight bitterness to the finish which offsets the sweetness in a balanced way. OK for the style. Would drink again.

From the March 2014 3R6P tasting. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a large fluffy dark tan head that faded quickly and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was sweet maple, brown sugar, chocolate and had a malty undertone. The flavor was malty chocolate, brown sugar, maple, faint fruity hops and a touch of wood. Long malty chocolate and maple finish. Moderately full bodied and creamy. Interesting.

Thin dark brown pour with not too much head. Really nice malty pancake nose. Taste is a bit muddled - not bad, but dry, lots of roasted malt and a decent amount of hops serve to hide the maple syrup.

Draft at walrus. Big imitation maple aroma.. But itís kind of nice. Taste is very sweet, maple sugar, vanilla, heavy roast malt. Itís pretty decent for what it is, but itís sickly sweet.

Very dark brown with foamy brown head. Smells like Aunt Jemima drizzled over pancakes. Tastes of roasted malt with a slight sourness. Maple flavoring lends some sweetness...a little artificial but not terrible. Medium bodied. Enjoyable but not great. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the Gnome. A bit disappointing. The flavor is ok, maple, malt and caramel with some smokiness. The palate is too thin, and thereís not enough depth or complexity.

Black color with a medium head. Strong, sweet maple aroma. Rich maple flavor. Tastes like it could veer towards cloyingly sweet, but is actually fairly dry. Light roasted barley. Nutty, almost woodsy. Full body.

Nice dark color with silky foamy head. The maple flavor is delicious and well-balanced with malt. Iím very happy that I gave this beer a try.

Bottled. Poured near black with a tall, creamy, well-retained dark tan head. The aroma picked up lots of artificially-sweet maple and vanilla over toasty black malts that were quite well buried.. smelled like diabeetus in a glass. The flavor found surprisingly sharp woody/medicinal notes on the tip of the tongue, with the expected sweet maple following.. some coffee and plenty more maple on the tacky, not-that-pleasant finish. Light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation.. this got caught up in a few places on the palate, and didnít flow well.. meh.

The names of Third Streets beers always sound very intriguing. The idea of the maple syrup, in the beer, was what made me want to taste it. It is pretty decent, coming from a brewery that has an okay reputation. It is definitely one of my favorites from Third Street. That being said, the main downfall of this beer is the fact that it is a bit on the sweet and thick side. Sometimes it is a little overwhelming.
