3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 fiulijn (12179) - Malmö, DENMARK - SEP 24, 2012
Bottle from La Cave à Bulles, Paris; bb Aug 2013, batch 306 Cloudy amber color with large creamy head, persistent. The aroma is nice, extremely spicy (cloves, coriander, gingerbread). Full bodied, with sweet malt flavor, followed by an expected and very strong spice character, and good bitterness level; some astringency in the end, from the spicy yeast. Atypical, unexpected, very good.
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 bhensonb (8991) - Woodland, California, USA - SEP 13, 2012
Bottle from Cave à Bulles. Pours dirty orange with a frothy 3 finger off-white head. Aroma of caramel and citric hop. Not NW strong, but with strength. Med body. There’s a strong earthy undertone (but this is a French, not Belgian?), with a deal of fruit and citrus on top. There’s also a grassy characteristic. The Aramis? Another very hoppy beer from Europe, but without the NW US harshness. Really quite mouthsmacking.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Koelschtrinker (8480) - Köln (Cologne), GERMANY - JUN 26, 2012
Hefig-hopfiger, sehr süßer Beginn. Zu süß, hintergründig dafür trocken, erdig, Heut. Lang anhaltender Abgang mit hopfigen, zum Glück weniger süßen Noten. 11/8/8/7//8
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 JoeMcPhee (7622) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 25, 2012
Deep amber pour. The aroma is quite earthy and hoppy with a sort of peppery flavour as well. A little bit of toasted/plummy maltiness with a little bit of spice and some nice bright herbal character. There is an aggressive bitterness but it kind of works. It comes across more like a young barleywine than it does an IIPA. A strong spicy yeast contribution that works nicely in here. It’s very atypical, but it’s still quite enjoyable.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 rlgk (7446) - Skövde, SWEDEN - JUL 24, 2012
Draught at Chez Moeder Lambic, Fontainas. Somewhat hazy golden beer with a huge offwhite head that stays forever. Hoppy fruity aroma, caramel, orange, citrus notes. Yeasty hoppy flavor, caramel, alcohol, hay, pine, grapefruit, pineapple notes. A bit hard to judge on this one, it’s an interesting beer, but a bit boozy and with some strange things.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 JorisPPattyn (7308) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - JUL 21, 2012
Draught Towering fine & dense, light yellow head, leaving textbook lace over veiled, but bright foxy-orange beer. Quite spicy nose with lots of clove, hint at cinnamon and orange peel; caramel, sweet underneath, even syrupy-sweet smelling. Orange syrup with a bitter spicy and lightly (!) hoppy edge. Again caramel notes, +/- maltsyrup. Retronasal quite a bit of orangepeel. Very slick & well-bodied, bit sticky. Pas mal, mais Daniel, je suis sur que tu pourrais faire mieux, surtout dans ce style. Trop de sucres non-fermentés, houblon trop timide...
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Leighton (6956) - London, ENGLAND - JUL 18, 2012
Bottle during the Semi-Final Tasting at my place, London. Thanks to Paul! Pours hazy gold with a medium white foam head. Nose is caramel, doughy toast, Belgian yeast and sugar. Medium to big sweet flavor with hints of coffee, toasty sugar, yeast. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Sweet finish with toasty malts, a bit of spice, some dried caramel, some dough, yeast, light baked beans. An interesting beer. Pretty dynamic.
3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Quack-Duck (6811) - Down South, GERMANY - MAY 2, 2013
bottle from saveur-biere. Hazy amber-golden colour, mid-sized white head. Aroma of resiny-fruity hops. Full-bodied with quite soem alcohol flavour there, spirit-like almost, but with pleasant and spicy hops.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Fin (6180) - Merton, Oxfordshire, England, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - OCT 19, 2012
Bottle from De Bierkonning, Amsterdam, Netherlands 19 October 2012 Hazy gold with white head. Impressively hoppy but with quite a floral element, thick in the mouth, reminds me a little of Brewdog Hardcore Double IPA. Bitter and with a great warmth from the alcohol, impressed with this French DIPA. Good beer. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.5
