Bottled, 330ml from Leamington Wines, Leamington Spa, Warks. Virtually black with cream head. Deliberately chose a French beer for tonight to show in a small way fraternity with our friends across the channel. The beer is sweet with a dark roasted malt, chicory, some bitter chocolate and reasonably silky, but probably too sweet for me. In my small way though it is joining in with a protest against a brutal, barbaric and twisted ideology that encourages the slaughter of innocent, free minded citizens. Mon nom est Glen, je suis Charlie.

Served in TeKu. Pours pretty dark with thick, browny head which disappears quickly. Aroma consist mostly of some coffee, cocoa, milk chocolate, some plum, almonds and maltiness, no hoppy aroma. Beer seems watery at first, but then leaves some acrid and earthy aftertaste on palate. There is a strong hint of roasted malts, some nuts and cocoa, but overall its pretty one-dimensional. Carbonation is quite soft. Its at best a decent beer, very drinkable.

33cl bottle from Brasserie Thiriez. Aroma comes across with a strong black patent chicory roast quality, chocolate in the sense of chocolate malt but not in the sense of nibs, which is a good thing IMO. It’s a bit too burnt / char-heavy, but otherwise enjoyable: dusty, herbal, clove-like... In the mouth it’s medium bodied, off-dry, roast-heavy with low hop bitterness. Creamy carbonation release but the mouthfeel is more husky / starchy afterwards into the finish.

Bottle @ home shared with Dutchdrebus. Dark brown to black color, medium sized lightly creamy beige head that lasts for quite a while and leaves fair to good lacing. Aroma is malts, sweetish, cocoa, a hint of iron, liquorice. Taste malts, dark malts, lightly cocoa, lightly bitter. Decent body and carbonation. Thought it would be more outspoken. A decent beer though.

Pours dark brown with a large off-white head. Nose shows subtle nutty and toast notes, Belgian phenols and soft cocoa. Flavours include more nutty malt, cocoa, spicy noble hops and a Belgian note reminiscent of a tripel. Carbonation is too high.

Dark red-brown colour with lots of residue from the bottle hanging in suspension in the glass. Quite a strong aroma. Roasted malts, coffee, cocoa. Smooth texture. Flavour has some sweet cocoa, perhaps some vanilla too.

On tap at Moeder Lambic Fontainas. Dark brown with a big yellowish head. Roasted and sweet malts throughout. Drinkable, but nothing special.

Taboada (409) - Compostela (Galiza), - JUN 2, 2014
Tasted on tap at 02/06/2014. Black Colour with a white beige head. Aroma of chocolate and light caramel. Taste is very sweet with predominance of roasted malts and milk chocolate. Aftertaste is lightly waterly and this is the reason of the low score on the taste. With a most intense aftertaste this beer would be awesome. Next one please!
