(Bottle) Pours dark mahogany brown sand-coloured head. The aroma holds perfumey soap, violet candy and wet forest alongside dry malt, nuts and some light sour notes. The flavour is light sweet to dry, light to medium acidic and light bitter with notes of tight dark malt, some tart yet subtle grapefruit/lime, wood and a whisper of wine. The mouthfeel is soft and tart with a light carbonation. Balanced and fancy finish. Near medium bodied.

750 ml bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours very dark hazy wooden brown with a frothy beige head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet and perfume-like with viola candy, sweet liquorice candy, sweet dark bread, brett, hay, orange zest, dry wood, dry soil, burnt caramel, slightly roasted malts, blueberries, candi sugar, moist green leaves and hints of lemonade. Taste is very tiny sweet, tiny bitter, slightly sour, fruity and herbal with plums, green grapes, lemon balm, lemon juice, dry wood, pine, orange peal, tobacco, lemon peal, viola candy and sweet dark bread. Mouthfeel is silly smooth, round, tiny dry, tiny tart and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and slightly sour with toasted malts, wood, viola candy, lemon juice, orange zest, grass, tobacco and moist soil. Intense viola character. Not sure if that’s good or bad.

Bottle bought at Systembolaget. Pours black like a porter with a good beige head that settles but remains. Brown is an exaggeration, I’d call it black. Aroma is sour, like a lambic or a flemish red, which I personally don’t find attractive. Can’t say I find any hints of wood, guess the barrel was old and well used... The taste continues the sour theme, along with some caramel and some bitterness from the hops. It’s not bad, but I have a feeling it’s at best one of those beers that grown on you. Maybe it should be drunk in a damp barn such that the environment added its’ character? Sunny Stockholm isn’t favorable. There’s not much wood in the taste either and I reckon the beer was matured in barrels used for limbic/geuze/red flemish ales. It’s a surprisingly light beer in the mouth though. Not exactly what I had hoped the beer would be, and certainly not worth the 14 dollars (149 SEK) I spent on it. It irritates me that I made an exception from my rule never to buy silly expensive beers. There were probably other beers that I could have made this exception for. To the peeps at Thiriez I ask: pourquoi?

Bottle 75cl #1164 vintage 2010. A dark amber beer with huge head and good lacing. Nose is slightly sour with brown malt notes, near an oude bruin. Aroma is caramel like, sweet, notes of licorice and ginger, nut, some sourness mixed with acidity and anise on the finish. Sourness is low comparative to Belgian ones, malty side is medium, easily drinkable but less complex than expected.

Sample @ SBWF. The sourness has got sweet berry qualities that makes it quite pleasant and refreshing. Funky, but not too funky. Some wood and redwine in the aftertaste.
