12 oz bottle. Amber pour, foamy white head. Grain and toast, nutty, biscuit, herbal, light caramel. Medium-full, quite sticky. One of the less impressive offerings I’ve had from Thirsty Dog.

Draft all over Akron. Pint at Larry’s. Pours a typical Marzen golden amber with very small head. Toffee, cramel, doughnut on the nose and taste is about the same. Nothing special but a decent, clean marzen which I like. Mdeium body and mild carb.

Hyper-clear, bright orange. Somewhat standard longneck, strikes me as kinda English looking. Toffee, nutty malt aroma. Straw, dark syrup, low bittering, toasted, leans sweet. Medium weight. Toasted, almost cocoa finish. To style. ABC Liquors, Betton.

Tallahassee, Fl - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - Betton - 12 oz bottle. Dark orange sparkling pour, slight white head. Neutral aroma. Flavor has some nice mellow bitterness to it, some ripening vegetables and a hint of caramel in the finish. Clean, even mouthfeel. Overall, not bad - just plain and pedestrian.

appearance: clear dark gold-to-brown, creamy near-white head. aroma: toasty, grainy, slightly nutty, a bit of caramel too. taste: sweetish and full of grainy, caramel malts, light brown sugar, toasted nuts. finish: lingering, slightly flabby, sweet and malty. notes: Tastes a little overly-rich for a true marzen, which I like to have a bit of zip in the finish. Not bad, though. Bottle at YMF courtesy of Rob.

On tap at Melt Bar Cleveland Heights. Pours a clear golden orange with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has lots of sweet grains with some bread and cookie notes. Flavor has sweet grain and cookie notes with a hint of butterscotch underlying.

Bottled. Poured into pint glass. This is a really nice refreshing lager but with a bigger and heavier body. A little darker than your average lager, this caramel colored brew is a real treat. Full of flavor but with the simple clean crispness that I want from a lager. Good stuff. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A nice, robust ale. Lingering palate and lots of maltiness. A dark copper with tons of flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours a nearly clear, dark brown with a one finger off-white head. Lacing is really lacking but head retention is better than average. Aroma is full of sticky sweet caramel, almost candy-like, with some hints of wet grass. Touches of plum in there as well. The flavor provides the same caramel candy notes but there is more of a roasty character. The hops are pretty muted but provided a bit of bitterness towards the finish. More dark fruit notes and light milk chocolate. Mouthfeel is a little stickier than I like but it works well here. Overall, a very nice American take on the style and one of the better ones out there.

When it comes to an Oktoberfest beer I pretty much expect mediocrity, since so few brewers do anything exciting or original with the style. Thirsty Dog Barktoberfest is a good example of what I mean. Sure, it’s a by-the-book Marzen, but it’s not particularly memorable. You want an Oktoberfest, you get one here.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a mug. There was no freshness date and it cost $2.49 ($0.21 per ounce).

Appearance: Pretty shade of copper; crystal clear though not much carbonation is visible. Pours to a one-finger, white, soapy head which mostly dissipates and leaves minor amount of lacing.

Smell: Virtually non-aromatic. A faint trace of amber malt, but otherwise has a standard lager smell.

Taste: The palette here has all the standard makings of an amber European lager. A light sweetness of dark malt with a mild caramel and toffee flavor on the finish and light, dry spiciness through the middle (probably due to Noble hop varieties). I also detect a slight peanut brittle-like astringency in the aftertaste as well as a slight tanginess. It’s not bad, it’s not off-putting, but does it serve any purpose? Overall, this is a fine-tasting beer, but nothing more.

Drinkability: I was surprised to see that Thirsty Dog Barktoberfest weighs in at 6% ABV, since it drinks like something much lighter and sessionable. The mouthfeel is rather light and short-lived. Crisp with a dry finish and some tang on the aftertaste. It goes down smooth and it’s refreshing while in the mouth, but it’s quite inefficient for its weight. One bottle is all you need.
