COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A robust porter, dark brown in color and full-bodied with a malty sweet taste. Deep roasted, yet silky-smooth! Two types of roasted malts, including deep-roasted chocolate malt are used to give this porter a rich, chocolately taste.

Thin fizzy head that disappears quickly. It has a very malty aroma with overtones of vanilla, caramel and some coffee. The flavor was a little weak at first, but then I let it warm up and it became somewhat better. The flavors that come through are of roasting. A different porter than what I’m used to.

12oz bottle. Pours a deep black with a one finger, tan head that sticks to the glass nicely. Aroma is pleasing with nice notes of dark chocolate, peanut shells, roasted malts, slight coffee, dark caramel, toffee, and a hint of floral hops. Taste is a balanced bitter. Dark chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, peanut shells, caramel, slight dark fruits, and as odd as it seems, banana at the end. Medium-full body with a low-medium carbonation. Creamy but not syrupy in the mouth with a soft, round carbonation and a dry finish. Overall a great porter. Dark chocolate, coffee, toffee, bread, and dark fruits.

Aroma is mostly malts. Taste is primarily roasted nuts and malts. Overall not the best porter, but not bad.

Approximately ½ of a 12 oz. bottle, consumed on 5-23-15. Fishy, yeasty aroma with scents of uncooked bread dough and roast. Pours dark brown with an amber hue and a moderate amount of beige head. Produces decent lacing. Simple, burnt malt flavor. Medium body. Ordinary palate effects. Overall, this is an adequately pleasant, old-fashioned craft beer. I can see this being the award winner that it was in the early ‘00s, but it fails to impress today.

Aromas of chocolate and coffee with a little malt. Taste of coffee and chocolate with a little smokiness. Nice porter. Thin mouth feel.

Pours an almost opaque black with brown-red highlights. Light brown head is fairly dense and persists well. Aroma is dominated by dark and roasty malts, coffee, chocolate, a tiny amount of charcoal, and a barely perceptible alcoholic note. Flavor is roasty in character with a moderate bitterness; the initial impression of espresso gives way nicely to a long chocolate-toffee finish. I’d be hard pressed to find much evidence of hops in either the aroma or the flavor. Overall, smooth and fairly rich, with low astringency.

Pours a black body with a thin milk chocolate head. Lacing is pretty good and head retention is above average. Smells of roasted chocolate malts and slight metal. Also getting some smoked malt with bakers chocolate. Not much hops or alcohol is detected. Taste is of a classic rich porter. Lots of sweet malt paired with burnt malts also. Bits of chocolate and coffee are in the mix. Very slight alcohol detected, not much hops. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and well carbonated. Head added slightly is consistency. Overall this was a solid beer. No flaws to it but also nothing outstanding about it. This beer was on my want list for years, glad I got to try it, another tasty beer from Thirsty Dog.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2014 On tap, poured into a snifter. The aroma is initially a strong raisin and milk chocolate blend with a light, smokey touch. Later on there’s some apple and plum with a nutty coffee aroma. It pours a deep, dark, and clear mahogany color with a medium, soapy brown ring and a light lace. There’s lots of fuzzy carbonation to the slick and smooth beer. The medium-full body contains notes of chocolate, raisin, and plum with a smoke and ash finish. The smokiness lingers lightly with an astringent touch.
