Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aromas of smoke, roasty malts, caramel. Tastes of roast, sweet malts, some smoke, and a slightly bitter finish. Suprisingly good!

Jet black pour with good tan head ring. Cocoa roasty nose is quite enticing. Smokeyness is extremely faint. But this is definitely one of the best schwarzbiers i’ve had. Extremely smooth and easy drinking. Would totally drink this again!

Pitch black pour with a normal head, lacing and retention. Rich nose of roast and dark chocolate over a touch of smoke. As it warms, the smokiness becomes a bit more pronounced, but still subtle. Light body with a slightly smooth texture which is spot on since this is a lager. Above average carbonation with a nice effervescence throughout. The flavor profile is simply outstanding - complex, balanced and intense. It begins with a slightly sweet roast character that flows into a roast bitterness with chocolate underneath. In the middle, a light sweet bitter chocolate predominates in an effervescent rush. In the somewhat dry finish, smoked malts take command and leave you with a campfire like smokiness that lingers.

A solid schwarzbier from northeastern Ohio, the Rail Dog provides a good alternative for people looking to drink local. Average to slightly above average, it falls into the category of beers that I drink because they exist at an affordable price point. If you happen to be in a Thirsty Dog market grab one and decide for yourself. At $1.99 a single the risk is fairly low.

Aroma / Appearance - A fluid base mixes brown tints with a black core. The creamy head falls in mere seconds. Smoky coffee, dark chocolate, and black tea balance out nicely. The combination invites reflection.

Flavor / Palate - The chewy mouthfeel releases several waves of flavor. First comes dark chocolate and coffee. The next sip deposits cool ash. Other than a distracting burst of black olive that briefly masks everything this tastes spot on. A solid seasonal could turn into an autumnal fall back if it comes around again.

Pours opaque black into the glass, with a tan head that reduces to minimal retention and light lacing. The nose is of smoked malts, not quite as dominant as a traditional rauchbier, but some campfire notes and lightly smoked peat. Sweet malt, chocolate and caramel, smoky grains and a balancing bitter back to finish. A silky mouthfeel and creamy texture makes this medium-bodied schwarz go down smooth and luscious. A very nice fall offering.

The Sampler, Brooklyn 12 ounce: Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is chocolate, smoke, and roasted malts. Body is really nice on this one. It is surprisingly thick for a lager. Taste is slightly sweet, with some real smoky notes in there. Light bitterness. Chewy, as someone else pointed out. Nice.

Poured from a bottle into a Thirsty Dog pint glass black brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is roasted chocolate with subtle smoky sweetness. Flavor is sweet cocoa upfront with a roasted coffee bitter finish. Pretty decent smokiness here. Flavors balance well on the tongue. Definitely would like to try this on tap when I get a chance. Very well done!.
