doppelmeup (51), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Jun 27, 2008 Pours like liquid dark chocolate into my glass. Cocoa colored head is slow to develop, even after a vigourous pour, and leaves bits of foam on the side of the glass as I drink. This beer has a very rich appearance. It is quite dark, but not completely black, as there are lots of browns and tans in the mix.
Great smelling beer as well. Chocolate malts dominate, with a fresh fruitiness apparent as well.
Taste is very good. Definite RIS bitterness, tempered by some unsweetened cocoa and some roasted malt. The alcohol is quite well hidden, just creeping into the mix as I swallow. I think it will be more apparent as this beer warms.
Great mouthfeel. Rich and thick in the mouth, but it leaves the palate quickly, just begging to be sipped again.
Overall, this is a very nice RIS. It is not as harsh as some others I have tried, yet still leaves no doubt that it is a big beer. Very drinkable for a RIS as well. I could have a couple of these at one sitting.
chicagodri (485), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 3, 2008 Pours dark black with a thin tan head. Great aroma of coffee, chocolate, and some roasted malt. Great mouthfeel, the alcohol was present. Some nice roasted malt. Really good stuff. The best part is that you can get it in 6 packs for really cheap compared to the rest of the imperial stouts out there. I highly suggest. faroeviking (4158), Faroese Beer Republic über, Denmark Sep 2, 2008 Pitch black colour with a dark brown rim. Aroma of roasted malt, deep dark fruits, alcohol and dark chocolate. Very good mouthfeel. Lovely roasty maltiness with dark fruits, bitter chocolate, some coffee and alcohol. Roasty soft bit chocolate finish. kelsmj (8), , Indiana, USA does not count Sep 1, 2008 Very dark pour. Minimal head. Mocha flavor. Very, very rich. Lots of complex tastes. I taste caramel and a dark colombian coffee. Very good single drink type beer. Very tasty. Would go well with a heavy meal. A big steak or a creamy pasta dish. Somewhat heavy on the tongue. undsioux7 (488), Cologne, Minnesota, USA Aug 31, 2008 Pours black with hints of brown and a small mocha head. Aroma is coffee, toasted malts and chocolate. Taste is the same as the aroma. The coffee almost becomes to much for me but holds in check. Good stuff. bretupdegraff (59), Fishers, Indiana, USA Aug 30, 2008 pours Black with nice creamy head that lasted a while. Aroma is roasted, coffee. Taste is very nice nice balance of coffee, dark fruit, chocolate with a warm finish. Awesome taste - nice oily thick mouthfeel. I will have this again!
