A refined version of our Kilted Monk, this Strong Scotch Ale is deep reddish-brown in color with a malty sweet caramel nose. There are hints of smoke, almond, and vanilla beneath the caramel flavor, and the silky mouthfeel gives finesse to this boldly delicious ale.

On tap at Thirsty Monk South in Asheville, this pours a deep mahogany into the glass, with a light eggshell wispy cap that reduces to a thin ring that leaves sparse lacing. The nose is of dark ripened fruits and caramel. Flavors are very complex, with vanilla, caramel, light toffee, fruity esters, a hint of the superbly-hidden alcohol, roasts and assorted nuts. The finish is a touch of citric cherries. A bold full body accompanies a smooth palate, providing a wonderful quaff that is just lively enough to be active against such substantive complexities. A truly great brew from one of my favorite local brewers.
